It looks like you'll get a hard time maintaining your filter with those cable ties all around it.
Hi Guys new member here the name's Luke
Been into fish for around 8 weeks (beginner) and it’s my first tank (2ft 65L)
I have a 6 foot tank to pick up soon that I want to get up and running as soon as I can.
Here a few pics of my setup so fare.
My local pet/fish shop recommended a shitty cheap filter I realized after a little research it would be useless for harboring good bacteria. After researching DIY filters I decided to build my own. The first was a sump and it worked very well but I thought It would be put to better use on the new 6ft tank I am getting soon, so I built my own canister filter and is working perfectly so fare just waiting for it to build some good bacteria up. Here is some pictures.
That’s the Canister filter itself. Made from an air lock container and a 550LPH pump. I have Filter floss, stones, clay balls, and cut up straws. I’m also using API Stress Zyme to try building bacteria quicker. Been running perfectly for a week now.
Thats the Input and Output pipes.
Thats the outlet. Its got good flow.

Lol Cable ties are just temporary. When I have to clean it ill have finished the timber jig with threaded rods to clamp the lid easier/quicker.
ok.
Are you planning to inject CO2 in your tank?
That 6ft tank coming your way is great. Id like to see that pic posted in here.

That's a cool cannister.![]()
koah fong
Juggler's tanks
I have a small power head that sprays small bubbles into the water flow from the canister filter. Don’t have live plants either in the tank yet. Should I be injecting CO2??
Ill get pictures of the 6 ft when I go get it off my mate it’s got a cabinet and hood so need to borrow a tray back ute to get it. Getting it cheap too witch is always good. He just wants it gone.
Ill be setting it up in the lounge room.
Definitely lots of hard work....
Nice job!
Mate, your filter's cool man! Wat fishes are you keeping?
Tanks only just finished cycling so only have 2 clown loach and 5 neon tetras.
Also Picked up my 6ft tank a few days ago. Cabinet is a little shabby so ive been fixing it up slowly.
Want to run a sump on the 6 ft but dont wanna drill the tank so im planing on building a overflow syphon box and putting the sump in the cabinet.
Have anyone seen the filters that sit above the tank at the back with a rain bar that power heads pump water over and it drips back into the tank?
Some pre made tanks are like that in the pet shops and seem like a effective way to filter. Maybe I could do something like that?
Or maybe another canister filter. Donno
Would appreciate the input![]()
Just uploaded 6ft tank pictures.
Fixing the cabinet up at the moment and spraying it black. Here's one of my filter ideas for the 6 ft. except it will be hidden in the back corner should be able to hold 8L of filter media will also be using the under gravel filter setup to that came with the tank.

Thanks mate. I love it too cant wait to see some fish in there. Just bought a bottle of Cloudy Ammonia which contains: Ammonia 20g/L im going to attempt my first fish less cycle. Ive heard it can be quicker among other things.
If I put a small bag of my gravel and maybe a little filter media from my 2 ft tank in the 6ft this should speed up the cycle too hopefully.
There are some bacterial additive products you can try for your new tank. But in my case I always let it go cycle naturally.
