Arowana in Botanic Gardens

Saw a couple of these in the Swan Lake, which also has lots of red-tailed rasboras along with the usual giant gouramis, tilapia and motley cichlids.

none of the "four/five" old world species have yellow fins. it does not look like the australian one and quite certainly not the new world ones.

and the first time I have heard of yellow finned bred strains, I only heard of gold, cross backs etc

Bro, Yellow-tails have been around for quite a long time.. It is definitely an Asian arowana (Scleropages Formosus). They are considered among the low-grade ones, similar to the Green

well, the so called "green" is actually the natural coloration. so this "yellow fin" do you know whether its a result of breeding or actually found in wild populations?

I'll go back and check the papers but don't recall any of them mentioning variations in fin colours, I was of the impression all the fins have body colours (talking about wild populations). better still I'll go ask the guy studying arowana genetics.

It's definitely an Asian Arowana (Scleropages Formosus), but the one in the photo is most probably a cross breed between different color varieties - probably Green + Red or other sub-variations.

There are controversies about whether the "Yellow Tail" variety is a purebred strain (the people saying it's purebred are I think farmers originating from Indonesia), but I would be inclined to think that the one in the reservior is most likely a crossbreed especially if it's 1) abandoned, or 2) bred within the reservior consisting of many sub-color variations. I could be wrong.

it depends on what these guys consider as "purebred". if what they meant is that certain population in Indonesia exhibit such a "yellow tail" form, and they breed the line only within the population, then I would be very interested in it.

if the yellow tail is a result of line breeding and then "purebred" within the line then its just another aquarium varietal which does not excite me.

i think is banjar red/G2 red or 1.5 red...
cuz only those have yellow fins....most likely is a banjar.
