    Split Pump/Container Filter

I bought a filter, the Gex Mega Power 6090*, which turned out to be very useful... It is an external container filter (like most of the Eheims), with one very useful difference: the motor goes INTO the tank. Set it up, plug it in, turn it on, and it's filtering.

The big difference is: no-priming -- I've always found that priming container filters is such a pain. To me, the Split Pump/Container Filter is the way to go.

QUESTION: Anyone knows any other make/model that has this capability? I've got a couple more small tanks to set up, and want to check out all options before I go ahead and get more Gexs...

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I think it's still a new canister filter in the market. Wait till it aged. It does look likes it could trap fishes between the glass and the pump motor. Can you check whether the motor in your tank heat up your tank water? How well are the electric wire connected to the pump?

1 canister with 2 option of motor for flow and 2 different hose size to be used for each canister.

Pengtsin, do you know that you could access their product catalogue? http://www.gex-fp.co.jp/fish/catalog/denshi/index.html

Most likely user error. But there are accessories to overcome this.

I think the link you provide is the only option available. I could be wrong.

S$120 for the Gex 6090. The Gex 9012 is S$150.

Temperature OK ... I've run the Gex 6090 for a week now ... no appreciable temperature delta. A few fish like to hang around the pump -- I think because of the water flow. None stuck yet.

As far as I can tell, the quality of the connections is no different from Eheim. This stuff has to be good ... people can get killed if they do it wrong. (I generally stay away from China-made pumps -- I once had an electrical buzz from one... enough to keep me away from them all.)

Not sure what you mean. Only 16/22 for incoming and 12/16 for return on the Gex 6090. Motor only goes into tank. No option there.

    Re: Split Pump/Container Filter

Looks like someone else in the forum has a similar requirement (not exactly the same) ... they needed a motorless container filter...

    http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...ad.php?t=58372

... and found one in the form of a Jaleco pre-filter container:

That's very cheap, but performance wise I guess it's still new so there wun be feedback until a more brave souls have tried it... Always wanted to find more alternatives from Eheims, almost tried a Tetra cannister but the lack of feedback held me back...

There are 2 model of motor available meaning that future owner can choose which pump option to get. Canister size looks the same to me between the 2 available motor size package.

Yes, there are 3 "baskets" in the container filter; and media is included for each layer. Check out Gex's webpage to look at the details (in Japanese).

UPDATE ON GEX MEGA POWER USE - AFTER A MONTH:

    POSITIVE:
+ Very straight forward to set up. [Love this!]

    NEGATIVE:
    - have to reach into tank to clean debris stuck to pump
    - Gex 9012 raises my 15 gallon tank by 1/2 to 1 C
    - debris on intake can jam filter (but so can any other container filter's) - you need to remove stuff every few weeks, I think.

Thanks for the update. By the way, how did you come to the conclusion that the pump raise the tank temperature?

I was running my old Eheim filter system (Aquaball) I put in the Gex 9012 pump (into the tank). I ran the two filter systems in parallel, and the temp. went up ~ 1C.

Turned it off, and it (the temperature) went down.

    Re: Split Pump/Container Filter

Is it possible to use the eheim extenal pumps to run this filter instead of the Gex pump and is it easy to get the spare parts?

As long as the hose fits, shouldn't be a problem.

The input to the Gex 6090 & 9012 containers (same) is the 16/22mm tubing; output is 12/16mm.

This is a fairly new filter system. Can't get the parts (easily). Any pump should work if you have the connectors and the container.

    FYI.

That is good news for people who wants an alternative to the GEX pump though the total cost may not be worth it cos need to add the cost of the new pump and the extra valves. I often see this filter advertised in japanese fish mags and though i've never used GEX products before, i believe the filter's quality should be quite good since they're made in japan?? The japanese are very particular about the quality of their products.

What's the flow rate? I can't get the answer from the webpage or maybe I miss that out. Where to get in Singapore?

    Re: Split Pump/Container Filter

Quality is one factor but practicality wise, with no spare parts, user are at the mercy of using something else to keep the filter running when problems arise. Some user are able to overcome certain situation but newbie to the hobby might not be that knowledgeable.

I don't know if its made in Japan, but if its made in China/Taiwan it should be to Japanese QC standards.

I was actually eyeing this model at C328 a few days back...I'm ashamed to admit the sleek styling and rugged industrial look are what made me think about getting it.

Being almost half the price of a comparable capacity Eheim model doesn't hurt either though!!

Can probably give Rein Biotech a call if you have concerns about spare parts, but they seem to be pretty good about having spares for their products available to order.
