Congrats on your new acquisitionsAltums are indeed a beautiful addition to any large tank. I love mine to bits
Hello guys, here's my latest acquisition. They are about 50 cents coin-sized now. Still skinny, but will try to pump them up as much as I can. All are living in peace in my comm tank together with platinum angels, corydoras, ember tetras and whiptails. The altums have also started feeding on NLS pellets greedily. Enjoy!
Full tank shot - keeping things simple this time.
Going for a bug that fell into the tank! Instant kill. They love bugs.
My favourite - The new altums actually co-exist with my platinums really well, they look like bodyguards surrounding the VIP in this one

Now I understand why you love altums so much. Think I'm slowly getting hooked on to them as well. Really strong character.
Thanks, hope yours are doing fine!
Nope I actually ordered them from Colourful. Flew down during lunch hour to pick them up!
Haha stop injecting poison into my mind.
Thanks for your kind words Joe!

They're really so tempting. I've been so tempted to add to my collection. I have 2 spare tanks to QT and deworm them in...if not for my wife glaring at me everytime i mention it, I would probably already have 5-10 more altums...and I will regret it when I realise I have no space in my main tanks for more grown ones!

One thing to note, you may want to increase the amount of wood you have in your tank to provide them with more cover and make them more comfortable. I have found that when there is more wood/cover, they are more willing to come out in the open, and less likely to go into a mad dash when someone unfamiliar comes.
P.S. yes, I did say unfamiliar...these guys recognize the people who are regularly around them. When I first moved them to my new house, they only recognized me and would dash around in fear whenever my wife approached the tank. After a few weeks, they recognized my wife, but if guests came they would dash around like mad. After yet another few weeks, they stopped doing it with my inlaws who visit quite often. Cichlids are such amazingly smart fish![]()
haha! we'll see how when the time comes... i'm dreaming of my dream tank setup already
Hey Yi Xiang, I did consider that actually, but as my tank is already undersized I decided to reduce the number of wood pieces in my tank in order to maximize swimming space for my angels. But I guess the best way to do that is to offload some fishes.I still have 2 pieces of driftwood which I do not know how to add into my scape. Or maybe I should get some background plants? Or place pieces of Java ferns on driftwood around the tank? Or do you think I should perhaps get some amazonian frogbits to cover the tank? Let the long roots provide some form of cover too? Would they angels go for the roots? Then again, I really have ZERO green thumbs.
So far I've never seen my altums dashing madly around the tank even once. Now they can follow my finger around the tank and nibble on my finger each time I place them into the tank. They weren't threatened by my family members or friends who dropped by either. But yes i believe that there is potential for them to be more 'open', as they do prefer to swim around the rear portion of the tank rather than the middle. Only when people move near the tank would they be more 'interactive' up front.

Mine are influenced by the heckels (which i keep with the altums) to do mad dashes. Heckels are prone to doing random mad dashes when something startles them. When the recognition kicks in though, they don't dash with the heckels anymore. When they were young and in their QT they never dashed either
