Was at Kallang river recently and saw the sand there quite fine and clean. I was wondering if I can get some and put in my freshwater tank.

I believe the sand there is different from those at east coast because at kallang river it's freshwater (saw freshwater fish there).

Anyone tested sand at Kallang river before? Will they alter ph value of the water drastically?

    as extracted from http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/non_version/cgi-bin/cgi_retrieve.pl?actno=REVED-341&doctitle=VANDALISM%20ACT%0A&date=latest&method=part&sl=1 :

Do you know how much a pack of "Sudo" japanese sand cost? The price is riduculous for a pack of sand imo.

qngwn: Thank you for sharing this bit of legal advice with the community.

minute me: I am sure whatever fine that comes along with the illegal collection of sand (if you happened to get caught) would amount to more than the $20+.

Based on this thread from a fishing forum, looks like it is. The Rochor River meets the Kallang River which together with the Singapore River ends up at the Marina Barrage. Question is how far back is the rule enforced?

Just buy some non-toxic kids play sand the quickest way to filter it is to place a hose in a bucket, then fill the bucket upto 3" below the top of the bucket, turn on the hose to a low level and the finest sand particles will rise and overflow from the bucket leaving grains of similar size within the bucket. Do this a couple of times for about half an hour and the sand will be safe for aquarium use.

    Re: Sand from kallang river

Can play sand be used in the aquarium?? Do a search on the internet and you can find the answer you want. It says on the packet that it's inert and non toxic. It also depends on what type of aquarium you are setting up, so it may not be suitable for some kind of set up.

can sand from kallang river be used? I have tried some in my aquarium and my fishes seems fine. But don't get from kallang river as it's illegal.

I have asked in the past in this forum where to get Play sand but apparently nobody knows. So now everyone knows where to get play sand cheap cheap!!

those who want to try el natural planted aquarium can get Aquatic compost at fareastflora too!! about $14 for a pack of 25kg.

Re: Sand from kallang river for aquarium?

Yes Kallang river is brackish, it is also not the cleanest river. I frequently see oil/diesel floating on the surface.

I wouldn't try sand collected this way in any tank of mine.

Re: Sand from kallang river for aquarium?

Well the Kallang River is used by watersport enthusiasts. Some will use those diesel powered boats etc, so that roughly explains why there's oil and diesel blobs floating about. Like Fuzzy, I'd never use sand from this source.
