I know its not really the season but how would you go about setting up a small pond (such as a barrel pond) or maybe not even a pond but a water container garden? If you want fish in it do you need to attach a filter?

Thinking of setting one up this spring.

Yes, some sort of filter would be good. Its more or less the same as setting up a fish tank, just that everything is outdoors. There isn't much info on setting up ponds here. Perhaps you'd like to try monsterfishkeepers or waterwolves, they have dedicated pond sections in their forums.

    Re: Setting up a Pond?

I am currently setting a pond right now in Australia and it is dead in winter now and I can tell you it sucks royally with all the wind. I think a major plus is to have a good filter with UV filtration to get rid of algae. I went for bare floooring with no substrate as to reduce cleaning. All plants (mainly hornwort and vallensias) are kept in pots. I am also using a 250w heater to keep the water slightly toasty. I am also keeping 2 paradise fish, 40 odd white cloud minnows and 4 borneo suckers, all of which are cold water fishes. For summer, I simply add more water to reduce the chance of any fishes getting cooked.

If you going to keep a filterless barrel pond with fishes, more plants and less fish is the ideal. Use java moss and hornwort too, it seems to keep the fishes happy.
