Grindal worms are not very big and a nice size for older fry and juvenile fishes. Adults will also eat them greedily. It's best to have a variety of live foods but in my experience, cleaned tubifex is still my first choice for conditioning.

You can chop up smaller earthworms but most apartment dwellers have no where to dig for them unless they are also hi-rise gardeners or are into vermiculturing. Compost worms are a clean source of very good high protein food.

Erm have you ever try feeding brine shrimps instead?
Personally i'm keeping apistogramma... And they do great too, in conditioning the fish health and breeding. Not sure whether your place, is it easily available but in singapore you can find almost in all local fish shop be it frozen or live...
