Just did up my 1 foot cube tank. Any suggestions on how to improve further? Currently have got about neon tetras, shrimps (cherry, orange & bee) with mixture of plants.

i think your plant mixture is too much for a small tank hence the tank lacks focus. Maybe a stone, driftwood or bogwood as a centerpiece may help. thermometer looks a little too big for your tank size too.

Thanks! I wasn't sure how much plants to get - so waiting to see if some will die off & then I'll be left with just a few. Still work-in-progress as I monitor how the fauna survive.

Using tablets CO2. Light wattage, not sure - using study lamp - so it's quite strong. I think it's ADA soil - got from C328 for $12/kg. Using combi of liquid fertiliser & also stick fertiliser - but they said soil naturally got fertiliser already - so only need to do it about 2 weeks down the road. Still new at this entire set up. Thus, any advise is appreciated.

ditch the co2 tablets.. nevr used them before but many ppl in this forum say they are useless. quite strong is hard to judge.. fertilisers might harm your shrimps, take note... it;s hard to keep a well-planted setup with nice healthy plants (with ferts) and yet striking a balance with the shrimps. I am having this issue myself..

Re: New Tank - Do give comments

I used the co2 tablets in previous tank & saw the difference with my plants & it didn't affect my fish/shrimps. First time I setting up tank that requires fertiliser sticks - so I'm also learning along the way - currently, just using liquid fertiliser for my moss to grow. Seen the difference using it with my moss - doesn't affect my fish/shrimp either. At least for the past 2 months I've had it in my previous tank.

Good tip, Robert! Thanks & Congrats on your International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest 2009 ranking. Impressive layout u've got there - I'll probably just do this once & for all for setup & then leave it running till I itch to do something different.

Don't asked me so difficult question lah... don't know how to answer Just follow the instruction

Excel is not exactly CO2, it is a chemical that seachem claim able to provide bioavailable source of carbon for higher level plant. Note higher level so it is not for moss, riccia nor algae

Actually it is good idea to try many different plant initially, unconsciously you will learn each plant behavior. The next time you want to do some thing bigger, you know what to expect and you know where to place the plant.

By the way normally you will itch very soon

Re: New Tank - Do give comments

I've removed the tetras this morning as I saw them 'bullying' my shrimps & between tetras & shrimps, my shrimps won the space of the tank coz they're more expensive & beautiful to look at. Heehee....Meanwhile, my tetras gotta contend for space with my kois in my pond instead - they might end up being koi food after all....

Re: New Tank - Do give comments

Sorry, I have no idea what plants they are - just thought they looked nice & got a variety. Realised that glosso needs lots of light. I've got a 11W study lamp for this tank - so should be more than sufficient & it's on about 3 hours in the morning & 5 hours at night. Also got 3 ottos to clear any excess algae.

btw, what's HC? I'm new to the names of these plants - only know they look nice & know that I've got Java moss in there tied to a Java Rock & a piece of driftwood
