U don't need to inject liquid fert into the substrate. Just pour according to the instructed portion. Plants know how to absorb them. Anyway what brand of liquid fert u r using?

Fins,
Is there a need for you to inject fertilizers into the substrate as you are new to planted tank....means your tank is new? There are products available in LFS called root monsters..those are used to boost the nutrient levels for older substrate.
For your information, my substrate is four year old. I have not once contemplate the idea of inject liquid fert into it. I just used root monsters. Anyhow, been in this hobby for quite a while, have not heard anyone coming up with this type of fert. regime.
Perhaps, you can share more of your tank data/parameters with us.
Nutrients can make plants grow well and can also screw your tank up big time if you are not careful.
I encourage you to read more and find out before you embark....try thekrib.com .
Whatever it is..try not to rush into doing things like that!

What r the parameters and tank data?eg..?
wynx is right. Didn't see it coming. Since u r new and your tank is new, can u tell us things like your tank size, gravel, base fert, filter type, lighting type and plants species u have. Please don't introduce liquid fert just yet. Wait until your plants are growing healthy for 3 months or so. It's normal to get algae growing in a new tank setup. So by putting in liquid fert now, u will encourage algae to grow faster than your plant. I believe u have read up or at least did some research b4 jumping into this hobby, yes?
Hi
What I have use is fertiliser sticks from ADA. You will need its injector to do this job. But that is only for mature or older tanks where the base substrate fertilisers need a booster especially around its roots and iron is use most of the time. A new set up do not require this, otherwise, what the other person said earlier will be the result. Algae Boom!!. But under normal circumstances a new tank do go through an algae boom period. Soon it will go away. part of the hobby....not to forget algae is also consider a type plants only we dun want them. If not it will be the easiest plant to grow and cheapest too. heh heh heh....[]

Fins, for planted tank, I do not siphon my gravel. I leave it untouched. Stirring up too much detritus may potentially cause algae outbreak.
Actually, you can start dosing fert at a lower amount at the begining just to get the plants started. After a couple of weeks you can start uping the dose accordingly. You may want to monitor the NO3 and PO4. They tell quite a good story about the status of your tank.
By ensuring enough nutrients, plants will grow well. Algae will be checked by good healthy plants. Take note especially on the macronutrients: NPK and CO2. Ensure enough of each in the tank. Having any of them limiting will cause massive algae outbreak.

As for injecting liquid fert into substrate. IMO, there is no point doing so. Just dose it into the water column.
Dose it accordingly as per your plants requirement.
Liq fert don't really contribute too much to algae problem. The most effective way to stop algae is to plant heavily and keep the plants healthy.

Hi Fin,
Yea plant area should be at least 80% as a rule of thumb. You can try difformis (spelling not sure) this is a nutrients hungry plants that will help to take up any excessive nutrients in the water column during the begining stage. You can then remove these difformis and put in your preferred ones. I use this method and it works at least and help reduces other prob...
happy planting

Hi,
Tank size is 4ft by 1.5ft by 1.5ft.Using an eheim 2217 material from bottom is Osyter shells, mid is Blue Mats ,top is Cotton.5L co2 tank wif eletric solenoid and co2 reactor wif bubble counter, countinh 4 bubbles per sec.Beat fert is JBL bought 2 packs Ard 1 inch high.Subtrate is gravel ard 3inches high.size per gravel 1-3mm.Use 150 watts MH 17K.WAter tempreture is ard 25 to 27 Degrees.Plants wise i do not know what are the names. You can refer to this webby for the pics of my tank.. http://arofanatics.com/members/fins/myfirstplantedtank
Hope you guys could give me some tips.
Fins...it seems to me that you have some non-aquatic plants in your tank? For CO2 level, you need to know the pH and KH of your tank water to see if it is adequate or not. Some of your plants are dying? Are you dosing any fert? One more thing...for a tank of your size..you might need 2 MH to have a more even distribution of light. Oh, you don't have base fert?

All my plants are aquatic.the Ph level is ard 7.5 to 8...For the co2 n kh..i need to buy the test kit..how much will cost ard?Yeah..come plants are dying..i am not too sure why..I juz added liquid fert on sunday..2 MH?My dad will kill me...bills will go sky high...I used JBL base fert..1 inch high...
Let's check your setup one at a time.I believe your lighting at 17000k is more suited for marine setup. Plants thrive around 6500k lights. But 6500k bulbs not easy to find, I heard. About getting another set of MH lights, I think u shld bcoz MH light beams on a focused area. So 2 sets helps to spread the light throughout the 4ft length. For that $$ I would get a PL set 4x36w. PL bulbs at 6500k rating easily available. I'm using 1 set PL and 1 set FL with a total wattage of 216w. Light is spread throughout tank and have tried almost all difficult plant species successfully. Your tank temp is 25 - 27c, so I guess your tank area is air-condition 24hrs? Becareful bcoz MH light will increase the tank temp without any cooling aid, eg chiller. I believe u have not read up enuff b4 setting up the tank. Anyway still can remedy, no problem.Think it over, either replace the bulb or get a PL set and sell away the MH. I'm sure u will find buyers.
2ndly, like I say, read up. By now u shld have known the plant name and requirement. Actually u should have find out even b4 u purchase anything.I'm surprise that u manage to setup the tank.Planted tank IS both scientific and art.
For ALL Newbie out there - with enuff knowledge you save $$$ and time. Anyway let's learn together.Ok, your task now is to identify the plants and their requirement. Others can help out here.

17000K is more on the bluish side....dun think i will change again..cuz my dad will make noise...how much is per tube for the pl and fl? i am thinking of putting reflectors so that at least the light get spreaded out evenly. My planted tank is in an air conditioned room...i added a computer fan to extract air juz exactly behind the bulb..I read up abt the technical stuff..but not the plant stuff..cuz choosing plants is easy..so i thought it wouldn't be important..Thanks bros

17000K is blue. After some time, if your plants are not growing well... guess what to blame...[]
At both L & R ends, the light coverage is pretty poor. You may not be able to plant light demanding plants there.
Choosing plants is easy? ... well maybe... knowing what each plant need and getting them to grow well is another thing.

Bclee, I guess wat he meant about choosing plants are the easy part, is actually that was what he original thought. I choose plants based on the overall look including colour, so to get the landscape I want. From books and LFS which landscape them or sell them I recce. Then if those plants fit into my landscape theme, I would research their requirement and any potential problems that might crop up later if I mix different species together. Categorizing them into 2 groups. Low light and high light requirement plants. Then for each group, I divide them into 3 sub cat. Foreground, Middle and background plants. This are the basic categories I use first in terms of physical look. Then once finalize the types, I will go into finer details like the characteristic growth and propagation of this plants including requirements in more detail. So on and so forth....So, u see not that simple IF u want a beautiful and well managed underwater garden which u can admire for years to come.
