Soil helps to lower pH. It is also good during setup stage as some of these soil contains ammonia, which helps bacterial growth. Cherries are comfortable in higher pH range thus soil may have counter effect, while CRS are comfortable with lower pH.

If your shrimp population is not large, in a planted tank, the shrimps can survive w/o extra feeding (that was what I did last time). But as shrimp population increases, e micro-organism may not be sufficent for them. Feeding helps growth.

Filter is necessary as it helps filter away dirt and it helps break down shrimp waste. I wouldn't risk a tank w/o filter, tho I have no experience of a tank w/o filteration.

    (p/s : is there a sticky/faq here where common topics are found/collated?)

I think with a filter will be so much better, without a filter, will risk ALOT.

I think temperature is ideal for sakuras/cherries malayan, blue, green shrimps etc. I think other bro can comment on CRS, i think good grades CRS are definately out though

I would still suggest using a proper filter. A good filter goes a long way. It's like, water without purification system vs one with purification system.

Wave maker creates turbulance in the water, which may cause some stress to e shrimps.

Do what is essential for the well-being of the shrimps. It pays off when you see your shrimps in a comfortable environment and starts breeding later.

Re: newbie need help in shrimp tank

Subjective. Most swear by cannister while many did have success with HOF.

One reason why cannisters are good is, the induced water flow through the filter medias, where benefitual bacterials works to break down nitrate/nitrite (sorry if i got this wrong).

For HOF, there is no water pressure going through the medias.

Thus, if you ask me, for long term, go for cannister.
