Scrub it off and then up your co2 levels + plus bring your phosphate level to about 0.1 to 0.2 ppm

Green spot algae is very hard to scrub off, and you may need to use a razor blade to do the cleaning job properly.

This is usually considered a healthy type of algae and is caused by excess light, excess nutrients. Regular tank maintenance / water changes is the best prevention.

Oh no, I'm starting to see green spot algae in my office pico-tanks too. Never had any experience with them. Anyway I only have CRS, sakuras and malayans inside. Apart from ottos, do any type of shrimps eat green spot algae?

    Re: Algae on glass

Dont use nerites. Use those horned snails listed as Clithon diadema. Its those that have black and yellow and tiny horns on the shell. These work quite well if you dont have much GSA (green spot algae).

Otherwise what you can do is to clean them off manually. GSA is still not too bad.. wait till you get GDA (green dust algae). GDA is like dust and can float around in the water column when you clean them off... really irritating!

Anyway, for manual cleaning you can do it when you do a water change. I find this best as i usually clean the lower half of the tank first and use the hose to suck close by so that i get most of the algae out. After that, anything that is above the water line, i scrub dry with a dish sponge, followed by a semi dry cloth to clean up all the scrubbed algae. This way the algae has no chance to get into the water and mix with the water column. It should go away or get to a stable rate such that cleaning it in the future wont be too much of a hassle.

Thanks, those are called 'horned snails' and look a bit like nerites with their bumblebee patterns right? Ok will go buy one tiny one later. I can't do much manually because my tanks are a tiny filter-less 20cm tanks with CRS inside so I can only do very very small water changes
