well just got them just in case i needed them for algae problems...

while feeding my tank of creatures. the shrimps grab the algae chips and run one side and ate.

didn't even share the food. had to put in more food but worried i would overfeed. so had to limit myself.

wish i can grab those shrimps and spank them in their ***.

hahahha... anyway yamato is the laziest shrimp i know... got them to clear away the algae in my tank and they just hide and buried themselves in the corner.. malayan is the best clean up crew for algae.. cheap and do their job in an instant.

my malayan always hides!! like i barely see it.

They wouldn't be hiding if you have a large crew of them (10 or more). In fact, they readily attacked sick and dying fishes as well as newly introduced fishes. I witness them ganging up to grapple sick fishes, drag them down to the ground and eat them alive. Fish as large as a full grown threadfin was attacked this way (I confirmed the fish is still alive), as well as sick shrimps. Healthy fishes are generally ignored so its seems that they know how to tell dying fishes from healthy ones.

In a way, they really made sure nothing get to sit around in the tank and rot. If I didn't see a dead fish in time, at least the fish would be picked clean in a few hours, rather than rotting and sticking to my filter. So thats a plus if the tank is very heavily planted and dead things are not always visible.

But don't expect them to clean algaes unless they're really very hungry...

I also found a way to force them to share...bought those very large algae pellets instead of using the small ones and throw the entire thing in. None of them could lift or drag it away and they fight with each other over it so much that they cannot cooperate to make off with it or fend off other shrimps

Then I fish the remainer of the pellet out after it turns soggy so as not to pollute the water.

The other way is to spam small sinking bits of food along with the algae pellets....it totally confuses them and they'll run and hide with one of the tiny bits rather than hoard one big pellet.

I have to agree that when it comes to clearing algae, they might not be as good as they are hyped up to be. Initially, they do help to keep some hair algae in check. But now, they just seem to laze around picking on little wood rather than clearing my huge chunk of algae on the moss.

I prefer Malayans, they are almost as hardy as Yamatos, and they are a lot harder working when it comes to algae cleanup.

Yamatos tend to bully / injure / hunt anything that smaller than them, and i've had some pretty big yamatos, they were feasting on my Galaxys and Cherrys.
