After seeing someone asking if it is advisable to DIY a PC casing fan for use i decided to play around with my spare pc fans.

Choosing a fan the one i choose was Current DC 12V, Rating 0.13A, Size 120MM.

Using a HP adaptor (Its only 6.5v and 650ma so the fan runs alot slower also less noise)

Cutting the wires for soldering (You can also simply twist them instead)

    Picture after soldering

    Picture of completed fan

    Using suction cups to hold

Man, this is really cool. thanks for sharing.

I hope you can advice me....
My tank has an enlcosed hood, all closed up. Do you think installing a fan will reduce the temp?

Actually there should be small holes to help vent out the hot air ftom within the hood. (maybe you can make som?)

maybe you might want to share pictures where you feel hotair vents can be placed? i've seen people drill holes in computer cases before (pardon me as i used to work sim lim).

there are actually 2 holes in the back (vertical to the wall) hood, which is used for piping. You think installing fan will work?

Re: DIY Cooling Fan (Using PC casing fan)

If the location is able to let you mount a fan facing the surface of the water then the should lower abit. anyway, you've tried not using the hood and check the temp?

Bro, try without the hood for 1 day and see if there is at least 1c drop in average ambient temp. Heat increments stack up on each other, that may reason.

    My guess is
    1. Sunsun wavemaker (0.5 Degrees maybe never use wave makers before)
    2. Seio M820 wavemaker (1 Degrees)
    3. Atman 106 or 107 (1 Degrees)
    4. Using a canister filter CF1000 (0.5 Degrees maybe)
    5. Lighting system + Hood (1 - 2 Degrees ???? unconfirmed as i never used hoods before)

Note: My CF-800 didn't affect too much so i think you can leave a minimum life support on for a night and check in the morning if you wish to see a larger difference.

hey bro, thanks for the good advice.

    for the last 3 days, this is what I did;
    - Change pump from Atman to big boy, no change in temperature. (tested for 24hrs
    - Open the hood over night... Temperature drop to 27 degree in the morning and maintain all the way even room temp is around 28 to 30. Guess I found out the reason liao...

    Congratulations bro,

Now you found the culprit, time to plan up.

If you have a drill you can make a hole and mount fans in your hood.
(If you using PC fans PM me if you need dimensions for mounting holes)

    Regards
    Felix

IMHO, installing PC fans in hood to draw out heat will be better because you will not be causing evaporation, unlike directing fans into the water.

To the thread starter, what did you use to power the fans? ATX PSU?

    Cheers

slowcat, you mean asking him to do a exhaust?
It might be better for him to do a exhaust plus making small vents to help intake of cooler air.

For your question, initianlly i was under-powering using a HP charger @ 5V

Currently using the below connected to a PC power molex for fast pc fan change (Both 12V and 5v connectors hehe )

Re: DIY Cooling Fan (Using PC casing fan)

Thanks for the clarification. I have a question. Mobile phones charger adapters are AC current and not DC? Nonetheless it can power a DC PC fan?

    Thanks

I did not know that it is not permissible to do so. I posted the similar question in the other thread when this question here was not answered, so my second question there was directed to a different thread-starter and I thought that this is permissible.

I take the point that same question in different threads not allowed, won't do it again.

    Cheers

    Hello slowcat,

It'd might be good that you post a hyper-link to that post on the next round. Helps other fellow members too

BTW: The HP charger gave up, i am using the 2nd one i made with no problems (Yet). But i tried it on another PC based appliance and it couldn't deliver the power stated (2A).

    Cheers

    Thanks for the tip.

I reckon that HP charges have much lower ampere rating, usually less than 1A. I'm no electrician.
