eden 501 help! does anyone have one that can help?

i just bought a second hand eden 501, but i think a part is missing. on the stiff solid plastic pipe which sucks the water in how is the little black plastic grate ment to go on the end of the pipe and is it important to have this part or can i just block the end of the pipe off? thanks for any help
