    Hi Guys,

I am using Eheim 2028 for my filtration and recently I have changed the media on one of the trays to bio home. You know how it comes with two layers of the balls and then the bottom most layer is the ceramic ring? I have changed one with the balls into biohome. I am intending to change one more this month cause the last change was 2 months ago ( I wanted the bacteria to settle on one tray before replacing all.) However, my question is, I am intending to change the other ball tray to bio home again. And finally, I am thinking of changing one of the tray with Seachem Purigen.

    So the questions are:

    1. Why did eheim pack it such that there are 2 trays with balls and one with rings?
    2. Is it ok to change all the media?
    3. If I intend to do bio home, bio home, Purigen, How should I stack it?
    4. Purigen works by having water go through them, is it ok if I do Bio home, Purigen, Biohome?

    Thanks for all your help!

Actually you don't need to change the bio-media to biohomme unless you have very high stocking density. The bio-media they give you should be sufficient for most aquarium stocking needs. The rings are actually mechanical filter medias and are supposed to be placed at the bottom tray of the filter so that when waste goes through, according to ehiem it's supposed to help "break" it into smaller particles followed by the black/blue filter mat to trap the particles. The second and top trays are where almost all the bacteria will be. I'm not sure how purigen works so i'm not able to advise on where it should be placed in the filter.

    Ah,

I have gone ahead and replaced biohome on the top and bottom tray and I used a mixture of biohome and purigen on the middle tray. So far the flow is not affected and the water is now crystal clear. So Purigen is working wonders! Just hope the flow won't be slowed down as the dirt piles up.
