I recommend something bigger like the CL 650 or the Hailea equivalent. The Hailea is quieter it seems. I'm afraid for my CL650 because of the easy to break plastic in and output for the hoses.

Opting for a slightly bigger chiller means it has more chilling power and takes a shorter time to do it's job.

Go to the chiller websites and read up on their specs. They will usually specify what size tanks they are suitable for and the required flowrate.

Your filter should be equal or stronger then the maximum required flowrate. Reason being that with all the equipment we tag inline, the actual flowrate the filter will be lower... plus the filter will slow over time as the filter media clogs up.

In practice the CL650 works well for a 3ft tank. cools very well and rapidly. Takes much longer with a 5ft tank since it's about 3 times the volume.

    Re: operating hours for chillers

the number, for example 1/10 refers to the amount of Horsepower the compressor has, and is a rough guide to how low they can chill.

Depending on how low you intend to chill your tank, this may not be enough for a 3ft tank. You might want to consider a larger CL-450 (1/6HP) or even CL-650 (1/4HP).

I saw some post saying Colourful aquarium has a 2nd Hand CL-450 for sale under $200, not sure if its still available, maybe can give them a call.

That said I'm also going to be a cheapskate and use my spare Resun CL-300 when I restart my 3 footer, I only intend to use the chiller to keep the temp below 27C though.

And like bro vinz says, you want much higher flow rate than the stated minimum for the chiller model, more the better.

Sorry just to check with you guys. If you say 26 degree is your ideal meaning you set at 26 degree is it? So normally how many degree difference you guys would set before it the chiller kick in again? Normally for standard,it would be set to 2 degree right? (Meaning at 28degree it would kick in) But any preference of setting to 1 or 1.5 degree instead?

    Re: operating hours for chillers

Some chillers come preset with their differential setting(resun for one); so theres no way to modify when it kicks in unless you add on an external temperature controller. Other more brands like teco and arctica can set up to 1 degree before kicking in.

Actually, I said exceed the stated MAXIMUM. Because after the slow down, the filter should still be within the stated range. Less likely that you will drop below the range.

It depends on the brand and model. Some allow you to set the tolerance, some don't.

You need to note how they work as well. For example, if I set my Daeil at 27 degree celcius, it will kick in at 27.6 degrees celcius and cool to 26.4 before going to standby again. (I can't remember the exact tolerance, but thats how it worked.)

Some brands might work such that if you set at T degrees celcius, it will kick in at T+2 degrees celcius and cool to T and goto standby mode.

    Re: operating hours for chillers

for my HC-100, currently I set it at 25 deg C. it will kicks in when temperature reaches 26 deg C and run till it drops to 24.9 deg C.

initially i set it at 24 deg C but find that the frequency of the kick in is higher, think because the water easier to shoot up from 24 to 25 and also it takes longer to chiller from 25 to 24. so to save electricity i set it to 25 deg C instead. next i may install external temperature sensor to optimize it.

I am repeating myself... but for the sake of the environment.

I don't see why we need the tanks to be so cold. Plants do fine at temperatures below 28 degrees celcius. Set your chillers at 27 degrees celcius is enough. Spare a thought for our climate, environment and the future of our children. Even if we can't give up such luxuries completely, every bit helps.

Hi Teco was having sales for their old model. Call them up and see if it's still on.

Hailea chillers kick in when it reaches 1C above set temperature.

I have my chiller on my nano marine tank set at 27C, and the chiller on my CRS tank set at 26C (Both Hailea HC-150As)

Yikes I was cooling a 3ft planted with 2x 80mm fans, and was topping up in excess of 10 litres a day...

    Re: operating hours for chillers

I am using a Resun CL-450 for my 3 feet tank (no external thermostat) . It is attached to a eheim pump to ensure adequate water flow rate. I set it to cool down to 26.5C. It kicks in when the temp reaches 27.5C. This chiller is more than adequate to cool my 3 feet tank. I leave it on 24 hours and switch on my 2 fans in the night to help cool or maintain the temp. It saves a bit of electricity in this way. Could consider switching off the chiller in the night as I am not keeping CR shrimp.
