After weeks of trying to manage the parameters of my water in this tank, I am only able to reach these results:
pH: 6.3
GH: 6
KH: 2-3
Alright here's the thing. I was aiming to get a GH of about 3-4 but it seems impossible no matter how frequent I do a WC. I know a GH of 6 is quite suitable for CRS breeding, however after about 2 days, my GH will start to rise to 7. It will continue to rise steadily throughout the entire week before my next WC. I think the problem points to my soil substrate being older than a year. I know it's time to change to a new substrate but I don't have a spare tank to do any form of cycling. Any suggestions?

hey bro..
maybe can give more info?
are there rocks or anything in there?
imo, the fact that your soil can obtain a ph of 6.3, shows that the soil is working fine.
although jojoe might just be the lucky one who changed the soil without causalty, please be reminded that new soil, especially soil with lowering ph capabilities tend to give off ammonia to kick start the cycling process.
the causalties will usually only appear after a few weeks. this is from my own experience. =)

Azoo soil? Never heard of it. Roughly how much does it cost for the largest pack that you bought? And where did you get it from?
There's no rocks in the setup. Just some driftwood and plants. The pH is about 6.3 because of the CO2 injection. Without it, the pH is about 7. What do you is causing this problem?

bro,
most important thing is,
hows your crs doing?
if everything is fine,
then no need to bother it.
bro what the temp of your tank?any chiller?

Yup there is a chiller set at 24C. I'm just afraid that as the water becomes harder, the survival rate the babies become lesser.

What media are you using?
I guess a GH of 6 is fine for many dwarf shrimps.
If you really a pro player, I would then suggest get a TDS meter and measured the total dissolved solids. Probably we can discuss from there. General Hardness as a matter of fact does not really bother the shrimps much if they are in a range of 2-10.

Icic. I was afraid that CRS being sensitive shrimps might not breed at higher GH. I was planning of getting higher grade shrimps for this tank. Media wise, I'm currently using ceramic rings, hard sponge and white filter wool (bottom to top) for my Atman 1000. Do you think it's ok?

The ceramic properties of the ceramic rings you have can be one of the reason for your consistent gh. No worries about the gh matter, they do breed as fine.
The parameters you posted are consider very good figures. You should care more about parasites in the tank if you want see a good population.![]()

Hi Spinex,
The past i do like using Magic Soils, fast, easy & clean water setup..
But for some reason it can't make it, so i decided to try using Azoo soils..
After 1-2 weeks i have more than 10 pregnant mamma shrimps and it breed successfully with more survival shrimplets..
