I am from Chicago Illinois,USA. I see many different nations flags on here, I was wondering one thing, is this forum translated to a persons country and chosen language or are these Americans in other countries.

Reason I am asking, is I have never seen non English natives texting in English so well, better then most Americans do.

Nothing bad just wondering, kind of took me off guard a bit and surprised me. Even my wife has commented on it.

    Re: Question on DB

Singaporeans study two languages in school: English as the first language and one mother tongue as a second language. The main mother tongue languages here are Malay, Tamil and Mandarin.

Some students study mother tongue as a first language.

Government and corporate business is conducted in English. But for the man on the street, depending on the parties involved, we use either English, mother tongues or dialects and of course the Singapore flavour of English called Singlish which is an amalgamation of English and other local languages.

And as boxedfish pointed out, AQ encourages proper spelling and avoidance of SMS, IM and Chatroom shortforms and mis-spellings.

There are no known publicly available translators that can translate this well.

    :-)
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

    Re: Question on DB

They never taught us that in our schools. Infact singapore was rarely if ever brought up except in warfare history.

On a side note, Mandarin is becoming a very popular 2nd language in our country.

I didnt mean to offend was just really really confused.

    I|Outfitter,

You are not the only one surprised by Singapore's standard of English.

By the way, 'American' and 'Singaporean' should have their first letter should be capitalised.

Just kidding. We're not that strict in AQ.

    Re: Question on DB

my friend from cali told me his social studies class used singapore as a case study for counties with ridiculously harsh punishments : /
his first response to finding out that i was singaporean was ' are you gonna cane me?'
warfare history and caning, not very good contexts for us
