WOW, we have our own in house phycology or algology in the house. i'm wondering if this will affect the redness of the red cherry shrimps. Will stay tune for more details.
Hi my name is David and Im going to introduce you the kin of green water everyone would love to have, our algae is named Haematococus , is a micro algae that bioacumulates axtaxantin the red pigment that give a really nice look to our fish, this microalgae is consumed by small fry, daphnias, artemia , faery shrimps and the can be fed to aour fish so they get in their stomaches astaxantin from this green/red algae( depending on the stage od the algae)
*green stage contains axtaxantin too
Here is a pic I took under microscope 100 x

Of course it does!!
The beutifull about that red structure is that it is basically the equivalent of a cyst, it suports disecation and can be stored and produce algae when conditions are good for the algae( it can be sent by mail) lol![]()
hmm... so is this stuff natural or manmade...
no trying to spoilt anything here but we mankind have done alot of damage already. including myself.
would this algae you have do any harm to our eco system???
since its red = takes in red colour of the light spectrum???
no red in light = what kind of plants need red???
damn it i'm confusing myself...![]()
NOno, No worries please its natural, and the red phase of the algae is like a resting cyst, and does nophotosintesis , it is present in almost every ecosystem but most time we do not see it beacuse it is unicelullar and it needs speciall conditions to become red(dissecation plus tempertaure plus salt, plus light) but when is green has small amounts of astaxantin and gives collor to fish , that kind of phytoplankton gives the stunning red collor in fresh water to fosh and invertebrate
arhhh... soh soh
maybe you might want to provide us with more information. imagine singapore has a algae outbreak like china. the whole lake in china had such a bad outbreak the whole eco system died.
Those thing happen for pollution in acuatic ecosistems, exess of soap, and fertilizers that reach lakes
Hi David,
We're glad you got tired of lurking and thanks, this is a great subject to explore further and possibly, an addition supplement to young fry.
I was wondering if there's any chance of collecting the "red phase of the algae is like a resting cyst" to kick off a starter culture. If there is, please advise. I'd also like to know how such culture can be sustained (this particular one is new to me).
For now, I don't have any killie eggs to trade but can send you a bulb syringe/turkey baster in return. Let me know.
I'm back & keeping 'em fingers wet,
Ronnie Lee

flamingos to become pink because they eat algae containing the red pigments too.
Shure, I can sell, trade, I have sent it before, growing this microalgae is really easy, making all the micro algae in the culture get to the resting phase is difficult, in lab I have archived that only twice, but fortunately, the green phase contains enought astaxantin to make fish and shrimp look better
