PH too low? A quick look at google results on optimal ph on cherry shrimps indicated that minimal ph is 6.2. That could be your problem.

    Re: Shrimps keep dying

Hi thanks for any advice given.

If possible, anyone can help me to address my perceived problematic areas?

    1) Temp 24-28 deg C : 28 in the afternoon with fan, 24 at night with aircon, temp gradually changing. I have a similar volume tank in the same room, no issues with my fish (WCMM, C. sterbai, no shrimps) inside.

    2) pH 5.5 : Possibly due to my amano substrate, initially during startup was lower at 4.5 whereabouts (red colour test colour), now orangey-yellow (pH 5.5-6.0). Tried adding 1 small piece coral chip, testing pH again this weekend.

    3) Heavy metals : Switched to Seachem Prime for WC, recently added bamboo charcoal to absorb any residual toxins. No dosing of micros fert, although I got use common tweezer between a planted tank (dosed with sera forena) and my shrimp tank.

Next plan of action : I might have to decomm my substrate and thinking of changing to Dennerle gravel black.

    Long weekend coming.

ph too low...just take out your cherry to a small tank mix with age water or just age water. cherry can handle normal tap water ph..
main tank just add coral chip or try change half of the tank water.
    y getting new substrate ?

    Hi Skywalker,

The amazonia 2 substrate giving me low pH readings despite water changes after 3 mths. I am changing to a neutral pH, non fertilised substrate. I hope it will help the shrimps.

Hi I have 2 tanks with Amazonia 2 soil (3kg each), one gives pH 6.5 while another is pH 5.5, even lower initially during cycling.

That is, assuming all other parameters inside the 2 tanks are consistent.

Oh wow what a great different. So propably you need to add some PH up to bring it higher to prevent any more shrimp death I guess.

Hi bro, i have problem with my tank due to the fact that my soil is getting high ph which is around 7.3. See my thread...
    http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...ad.php?t=60001

Maybe we can change our soil as my crs need lesser ph so i though maybe i can slowly trying mixing your soil with mine into my tank. Since is a used soil, i suppose it would not have much of a problem of ammonia issue right? I can just slowly put it into my tank even if i don't remove my crs right? I guess it may also be a bit risky anyway. Normally if is a totally new soil then ammonia spike would definately be a main issue right? Do correct me if i am wrong about anything i state above.

As for your case, my soil should be suitable for yours as my ph is around 7-7.3 or if you interested, i also have gravel which will not affect any ph and would be suitable for your cherry shrimps.

If you interested, you may drop me a pm on your contact to see how we can make arrangement for the changes otherwise is ok. Cheers.

I'm not sure... i know that some substrate have ammonia to kick start the cycling process though... to err on the side of caution, its best that you add abit of soil to the bucket and test 1 day later to see if it is neutral or has ammonia.

do not trust LFS words. take what they say with a pinch of salt. 3 LFS owners told me vermex is okie to add with shrimps. guess what? all 3 wrong.

yo bro, yest did 50% water change still 5.5-6.0 pH. Now v v v lazy to change the substrate. I am worried that I have to recycle the tank again.

added few more coral chips to see whether the pH normalize abit. Monitoring now.

Not to worry, if i decide to change substrate I will contact you. Its ok no need to exchange. You can have it.

Or you want the cherries? I take your CRS.

    Re: Shrimps keep dying

i did 50% water change over the weekend and added some coral chips.
    tested the pH, still 5.5-6.0.

however, my shrimps did not die for past 3 days.
    good news for me.

    Re: Shrimps keep dying

Hi no shrimps died after 1-2 weeks.

    Some information:

    1) pH still low at 5.5-6.0.
So conclude that coral chips and 50% water change remedied the shrimp deaths.

    2) Did not do KH and GH test.

    3) Now proceed with 10% water change weekly exclude top up
and changed to GEX M filter with biohome and coral chip.

    4) I made one observation, if your pond and ramshorn snails shell look whitish and "nua nua", i think not enough mineral in the water.

    Cheers
