they can seriously multiply very fast if you don't keep their population in check. They are great at clearing leftover food. i prefer the horned snails to ramhorns.

Hi,
I have read in some wensite that Ramhorms are great to have in an aquarium. But have also come across some web mentioning that they are a pest.
Any expert can give some advise on whether Red Ramhorms are ok to have in a planted shrimps tank?
Thanks in advance.![]()

Commonly known as apple snails, they are not a threat to planted tanks.
Only problem is that they multiply fast.
Very efficient cleaners...efficient to the point that you don't even have to bother to bring dead fish out of your tank. They will clear it up in matter of hours.![]()

if you need any, can pm me... i have quite afew to sell off... :P

Hi all,
Are the blue variant in anyway different to the normal red ones?
As a personal point, pond snails are worse. They even munch on my plants and moss.![]()

I don't like snails crawling on the glass, so I would say that they are pests.

All snails are pest.

Personally I kept both horn snail & ramshorn snail in a single tank. 3 Horn snail are with me for the past 2 years doing very good job clearing my tanks never multiply, however recently introduce 30 ramshorn snail into the same thank and guess what, they eat and "shit" & multiply like crazy until I have to put it up for adoption, however they breed so fast that still unable to clear them away, hence introduce another 5 assasin snail to help me clear them off once and for all. so I guess by this you should guess what my answer to the question here...![]()

Guys..may be you could put Dwarf Puffer to control the population. The DW will eat small/newly hatched thus keeping the adult snail numbers constant.

depending on what snails you choose, they either become pests or help you with your tank maintenance. i will never have ramhorn in my tank anymore because of their amazing rate of producing babies. Many people said that apple snails eat plants, but i have never seen my 4 apple snail doing that. I am lucky so far not to encounter pond snails in my tanks, but if i ever spot 1, i will kill 1. Spot 10, kill 10.

I've become a ramhorn assasin since the day I rescaped my planted community tank. Everyday, I'll inspect the tank for them. So far, the last snail killed was this size ---> o
And that was 3 days ago. Yippee!

Assasin snail might be good to clear Ramshorn snail but there are some other small snail that is so irritating which the assasin do not kill them, hence I have to be the assasin myself, but they are everywhere, hard to get rid once and for all....![]()
