Have a unused 3ft balcony tank that is gathering dust and junk. Don't want to invest in lights, pumps or anything electrical (costs, routing issues). There is plenty of sunlight anyway but as it faces the sea, temperature is moderated by the sea breeze.

    any suggestions for the tank?

    Some preliminary ideas :

    1. to grow floating water plants like salvinia, hornwort, frogbits etc (any others?)

    2. to use as a breeding tank for my shrimp armies.

other ideas? I will try anything if it is interesting and low cost/low effort....

Basic thing filter with pump is a must la. As for the temp issue, depends on which type of shrimp you keeping. I dun think crs can make it without at least a fan as at times the weather would be quite hot even with sea breeze.

I agree with vernonlcm, water and air pump is a must.
Both items do not take up much electricity.
You can do a moss tank.

maybe I can run the setup with a timer. The tank already comes with a pump and lights.

The moss tank idea is very intriguing. what kind of moss would be suitable? Would the high light conditions be conducive to mosses. I can probably do a combo of floating plants and mosses, plus a couple microrasboras to take care of any mossies. I am guessing it won't need any substrate....
