    Dear all, is the one shown in the following link known as balloon ram? Can anyone also enlighten me on the sexing of this fish? Thanks.

    yeah thats a balloon ram female is less colourful more of a yellow colouration with slight pink belly

    The best way to tell is probably to wait for the fish to reach sexual maturity (may take 2-3mths depending on when u bought ur fish). Only then will the tell-tale signs (reddish belly, 2nd ray of the dorsal fin, etc) be more obvious.

    Balloon rams are often harder to sex than the normal 1s (Microgeophagus ramirezi). Sometimes, their genes get so messed up that the males exhibit the reddish belly throughout their life.

    Though not as hardy as the normal 1s, I could never resist keeping them cos they look so cute. [:]
