    Hi all,

I was wondering if I can keep betta (1 male only) in the community tank? Read that it is ok to keep betta in community tank as long as I
    • keep 1 male only,
    • no other fish with flowing fins (e.g guppy)
    • no other fish that will nip betta's flowing fins (e.g tiger barb, serpae tetra, etc)
Not sure if it is safe to keep Betta with Platy and Corydoras? Will it attack them?

Any bros here with experience to share? Thanks!

    My setup as follows:

    Equipment
    2 ft tank
    HOB filter
    lapis sand
    Driftwood & Rocks

    Flora
    2 Java fern
    1 Anubias nana
    Java moss

    Fauna
    6 Corydoras Panda
    4 Platy
8 Rummy Nose Tetra (haven't added in yet)

    Re: Betta in Community Tank?

I keep my crowntail betta with some of my other fish, zebra danios and some fish belonging to tetra family. At first the betta will be agressive but it moves so slow it cant kill shit, so after 2 days it will get sick of chasing other fishes around. that is if u keep them in a big tank, mine is 3ft. no guarantees for other betta, maybe mine is just lazy and slow

betta alone should be fine. i use to keep them in a community tank alone too.

as long as the other fishes are not too small. Usually my betta was bully by other fishes biting his tail.

Hi, this is one of my fears too! that other fishes might nip at betta fins/tail.

Care to share what are the fishes that bullied your betta?

    Thanks.

The fishes (tetras) that bullied my betta got their eyes bitten out. Lost a fair bit of the tetras this way. Mine is a 2 foot planted tank

I keep 3 male bettas in my 4 footer. No problem so far with the other fishes (cardinal tetras, discus, corydoras and ottos). They will eat shrimplets though so beware if you keeping shrimps.

    Re: Betta in Community Tank?

Hi i feel Betta should be kept alone because the purpose of keeping them is to see them flare constantly and this way,it brings out the beauty in them and the value. Sorry this is my point of view.

    Re: Betta in Community Tank?

I would think it would flare more in a community tank? Then again maybe depends on the personality of the Betta. Believe every Betta is unique.

Otherwise can put a mirror for it to see its own reflection to trigger the flaring.

    Re: Betta in Community Tank?

No problem. I keep one male in my 2 ft tank with neon tetra, red eyes tetra, silver shark , rosy bards and several catfishs.

It's the most peaceful and cool fish in the tank. Once it even stay well with Gourami.

    Re: Betta in Community Tank?

My friend's tank has a betta and goldfishes, suckers and all sorts of cheap fishes from the LFS. They all bug the betta but the betta never bugs them. He seems to ignore the other fishes. Hope that helps.

I have a very aggressive female betta in my community tank. it's not really attacking other fish but ocassionally will attack my zebra loach. when I tried introducing another female betta in, it chase the other female betta like mad. so i took it out.

    Re: Betta in Community Tank?

It usually depends on the individual betta. I had a betta in my community tank, with shrimps. no problems with betta eating shrimps, i can even see the betta resting near them without harrassing them.

I kept some bettas and fed them baby guppies and shrimps as treats. Some would chase the shrimp and eat while others would ignoret he shrimps.

Also it depends on the number of hiding places for other fish and the betta. Just make sure other fish swim faster than the betta and are not fin nippers.

Even neon tetras may nip on the bettas fins on some occassions.
    Cheers,
    JJ
