    Hi all,
Is there any HOF with surface skimmer? Is it useful as I am planning to use it for my 1 ft tank.
    Please advise. Thanks...

The surface skimmer can be bought at any LFS as an additional attachment to your HOF or any other filter. But there are some HOFs that come with the surface skimmer.

I do not think that a surface skimmer is particularly useful. You can do without it for your tank.

I can not tolerate the layer of oil on the surface, and i believe the removal of these oil will help to increase the level of light and air to the water. I may be wrong...

I was considering to buy Gex HOF, but I believe it do not come with any surface skimmer. Does using a HOF reduce the amount of oil due to "waterfall effect"?

    Please advise...

Oil in the aquarium could be introduced by the following:

    1. Fish food – Most fish foods have some fat in them.
    2. Your hands - Everyone has oils in their skin, not to mention that hand lotion you slapped on.
    3. The air - Cooking oils aerosolize into the air, which is why kitchen surfaces get greasy. If your aquarium is in the next room, the tiny droplets of oil in the air can easily be carried to the tank.
    4. Equipment - Filters and pumps can have small amounts of oils to lubricate them.
    5. Fish waste - Fecal material from the fish contains some fat.
    6. Dead fish - In the unhappy event that a fish dies and is not immediately removed, the decomposition of the body releases fat into the water.
The reason for the oil to appear on the surface of your aquarium water is because you have insufficient water movement in your aquarium.

A surface skimmer would be able to skim off the top of the oil slick in your aquarium but it is only a temporary solution. To get of all the oil present in your aquarium, you can do the following:

    1. Take a piece of paper towel.
    2. If you are using powerheads and filtration systems, cut off the power supply and wait for about 20 ~ 30 seconds for the water current to stop.
    3. Slowly place the paper towel flat on the water surface over the oil layer. Do not despair if part of the paper towel gets submerged below the water.
    4. Hold each corner of the side of the paper towel nearest to you, and slowly pull it up and towards you. As you pull it up slowly, it will pull the film of oil together with it as it breaks contact with the water surface. You may have to repeat this procedure a few times before the oil film is completely removed.

Oil and surface debris were the main reasons I went for an overflow system. There is some cannister intake system that have some overflow built-in, so that gets rid of the surface oils and debris.

    Cheers
