Hi I have 2 tanks inside my room.

As I am quite sweaty after work and sports, my room tends to get very smelly. Parents are complaining.

However, I did not dare to use any aerosol spray in my room because I am afraid the mist would get into the water, affecting the fauna inside.

What gives? Any alternative to get rid of odor with non-spray methods? Thanks.

Open your window to air your room is the best. Maybe during weekend open the window to let some sunlight in. This will help in removing the extra moisture and the smell also, cheap an good. My room also the same and find that airing is this the best and effective.

It's usually the worn once clothes and linen or rug/carpet.
My friends had terrible smell in their room and it was their worn once jeans that they had no time to wash. One didn't smell bad but more than half a dozen added up.

There are some electronic air purifiers that work by ionizing the air.
There are some that are alcohol based like Lamp Berger[note that it really works despite the way it is sold]. I found it really rids of the cigarette smell from my clothes after a night out in a smoky place. I don't use it anymore as it's like burning money!

Aerosols tend to mask the problem rather than solve it, some like Febreeze does bind the smells but IMO it would be better just to take the offending thing and wash it. Probably use an aerosol before parent's 'inspection'.

The smell comes from bacterial activity. If you are an active sports person, I recommend you shower BEFORE your activities and shower after too. This will cut down the bacteria activity on your skin. Make sure you wash your soiled clothes regularly and have it SUNNED. Its important to sun your laundry.

After you accomplish those basic steps, you can consider adding fragrances because doing this before hygiene obviously only mask the problem, not tackle it.

Remove both tanks out of your room? Then you can do whatever you want in your room.

    Its a case of come-home-dont-shower.

I have bad habit - like to laze around before going for shower.

Haha, it's great to have tank in my room, I am looking at it while typing the reply.

Theres some charcoal-based deodorant for refrigerator, maybe I should try it.

    Thanks guys for the replies.

Re: any non-aerosol solution to smelly room

Besides washing up, airing the room and maintaining a generally accepted level of personal hygiene, I would be hesitant to use commercially made deodorizing aerosols or burn aromatherapy oils in the room with the fish tanks.

However, I've used Baking Soda and it works cheap and well. Baking Soda is used for the tank to raise KH, and mostly, a little goes a long way and the rest is wasted. Use it to deodorize clothes, rugs, etc. Do a google search and you will find many more interesting uses for Sodium Bicarbonate.

Next level up, is to to make some "Garbage Enzyme". In the process, you help cut down on garbage disposal too. Read about its uses and how to make it at: http://www.o3enzyme.com/enzymeusage.htm

Hi Bro, your "generally accepted level of hygiene" = my smelly room acceptable for me, not for my parents ...

Yesterday I bought Ambi-pur deodorising pearls, supposed to absorb odors not release scent. However, I still smell some fragrance. Not sure if its good for my fauna inside the tank

p.s. I will try using sodium bicarbonate. Thanks

Re: any non-aerosol solution to smelly room

I got a simple and cheap solution for you.
Put a or some DRY soaps in your room
and very soon your room will smell nice,
and it is very lasting. When the scent is weaker,
you simply turn the soap over, and the scent
    will be back.

When you have used up both sides, use a pen-knife
to slice the top thinly off, and you can enjoy it
once again. One of the friends chop the soap into
multiple piece, in what he said as increasing the
surface area that is in contact of the air.
My experience is that LUX and Dove soap smell
is quite acceptable and lasting, they are quite
reasonable price too. The keyword here is DRY.

Other methods are putting lemon pieces in the
room, but be aware to take them out after
they become dry or they will become foul smell.
Air your bed mattress and pillow, and open
window to allow fresh air to come into the room
    will help too.
