Got problems with large snails? Get an arowana...

Interesting what my arowana will eat...

First I noticed him picking a snail off my moss wall and then dropping it. The shell was about 1cm diameter. Nothing unusual, he's picked snails by mistake before.

I walked away and when I walked by again, I noticed him trying to get at something behind the rainbar. Before I could get close enough see what it was, he'd already got it in his mouth and chomping on it. Watched him, and saw what seemed like bits of snail shell dropping out of his mouth and thru his gills as he chomped on it. Can't think of anything else in the tank that it could be, whether animal, vegetable or mineral.

The first snail I saw him pick up had a thick shell... probably not chompable. The second one, the shell bits looked rather thin and fragile. The strange thing is, he has left other similar snails alone, swimming right by and not caring.

Maybe the other snails took a contract out on the victim. Or the victim owed "ah-long san" (local term for loan shark and "long" happens to sound like dragon in chinese) big time.

Just an odd story I thought I'll share.

Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.

Errr... Vinz, Ah long san is a person by that nick name, not a general term. The correct term is "Ah Long" only.

Now I know where all those big snails in my tank have gone to!!!...

But seriously, I desperately need some algae controllers in my tank. Any advice? The algae in the tank are mainly fuzzy algae on the leaves, nothing really uncontrollable, lest for the aro.

My Panda Gold is extremely aggressive and simply picks out anything it can find, except for those tiger barbs cos they are simply too fast for him to catch, even the plecos aren't spared. Even 1.5" Mollies are not spared by this 7" monster, one helluva meal. So I reckon those are the only ones who can live harmoniously with him. Tried 200 malayan shrimps, they dissappeared into deep space in a matter of 2 days. Guess he decided they will live a better life in his stomach...

I think for most arowana planted tanks, nutrient control will have to be the way to go.

Update: just saw him eat another yesterday... and also recalled seeing him chomp on something which produced little shell like fragments. Still did not see what he actually chomped on, but the this time I'm almost certain its a snail.
