    hi!

currently im using black quartz substrate which i dun find it a good idea since its nt giving nutrient to my plants so the problem is if i do a 100% water transfer with shrimp to a pail and do a change from black quart to gex soil, will there be any dmg to my shrimp when i put them back in? im intending to transfer 50% of my tank water back into the tank n fill in the rest with new de-chlorinated water. pls advice!! thanks

there will comfirm be an ammonia spike even if you are using old gex soil. just remeber to test your water before returning ur shrimps back to the tank. it will takes around a week or so.

should be the other way round, gex below with quartz on top. If you want quartz below, then no point having the quartz in the first place, but still possible.

no matter what you do, NEW GEX SOIL will cause ammonia spike in the tank. Its always better with another tank on standby. its best for you to hook up an air filter at least to your pail in order not to suffer any casuality. Remember to use the sponge/bio-ring in your current filter. This will help the shrimps survive in the pail. throw some moss in to let them cling on to. When u wash your quatz ( remember not to use untreated water, use a litre or 2 of distilled water ) keep the water. Pour wash water back into the tank before you layer your NEW GEX SOIL to at least let the BB settle in the soil first. then add 50% of your shrimp water in ( remember to top up the pail with treated water, you don't want your shrimps to suffer from water parameter problems ). from there, you can rescape ur tank and test your water till it stable/same parameter with the pail.

-all comment is from my personal view -

its best to use SS mesh to hold the moss down, if not u can try netting the moss on small rocks and evely spread out.
