I just started out with my new low tech planted tank a week ago and I'm in need of some advise!!

    Its a 40" x 19" x 24" tank
    11W PL light - AquaZonic
    Filtration - Atman HOF, HF-0100
    Gravel -GEX Soil
Plants - Taiwan Moss on Driftwood & Japanese Hair grass

Do u guys think I should setup a moss wall as backdrop or long ferns given the dimension & for a low tech setup?

Next, would it be also advisable to add in some CR scrimps?

    Thanks~

    Hi,

Perhaps you would like to wait a few weeks for your tank chemistry to stablised.
Whats the temperate of your tank? CR shrimps need low temp ~24C.

imho, ferns are easier to manage but take up more space, unless you use narrow leaves? moss wall is fine, but a stronger light will help abit as in my experience the lighting really need to penetrate all areas of the mesh

Alas > Temp is around 28-29C, Guess that would rule out CR shrimps? how abt yamato shrimps?

Gene> I think I'll go with moss wall.

Also, beside chiller or fan, any method that can bring down the water temp?

Yamatos will do fine but if you want to establish a shrimp population then you should get some Malayan shrimp instead. But do plant more so that some of the shrimplets can make it to adulthood as the fish pick them off. That moss wall would do great as a hiding spot.

CR = Cherry Red or Crystal Red? Cherry Red shrimp can survive in temp around 30C.

Can I know the reason for this? Does hair grass need CO2 or high light? I am thinking of using hair grass for my next low tech tank.

    hi

nice low tech setup you have there. if you want to add a moss wall, then you might have to shift your HOF to the side of the tank. will still work okay IMO though.
    Yecch!

Thanks..I will indeed shift my HOF to the side. My only concern is that...will it be too cramp for the fishes!

Re: My new Low tech tank

I think they are growing, some can see roots spreading horizontally (those I planted at the edge of the tank)

But something happen, the otto are fast swimmer and there are bashing thru the hair grass causing some not so well planed grass to be uprooted! Arghhh!!!
