Ok. So today another one of my guppies died =[
Please help me, i need some advice and help as to what is going on...
I set up the tank, put the soil subrate about 1/2 an inch. i put about an inch and a half of gravel and then i put the bamboo half an inch into the gravel. I let that sit for a couple of days after i added Tetra Safe Start water conditioner. I went to the pet store and bought my two mollies, two platys and three guppies and two ghost shrimp, four days later one guppy dies and today another guppy died. This is making me very sad.

    Re: Help!

normally people cycle their tank for about 1 month before they add any faunas inside. Your couple of days are not enough. oh and i think i read somewhere that bamboo has sap that might harm your faunas. your tank will look much better with just black substrate instead of blue.....................

Those bamboo are not really aquatic plants. I've read somewhere that they might survive for months but after that will rot and foul your water. Get some real aquatic plants.

Sorry to say most of your fishes need alot of salt. Look like clamp fin. That stones and plants are more suitable for for big fish. Best for cichlid setup. Before u buy, please as the supplier need salt? wat is the amount? Need black water? What stone or sand is good?.
Treat your fishes like your baby. The sign and symptom is the same but cannot talk.

    Re: Help!

Well I talked to the people at the pet store who sell bamboo plants as aquatic plants both at petsmart and petco. They said it's perfectly fine and encouraged it for the fish that I have. So I don't think that is the case. My last guppy is still doing fine and my other platys and mollys and shrimp are ok too. What else could be wrong?

Often in large chain pet shops it will be sold in black slitted pots rooted in rockwool submerged, stating it is an aquatic plant. While it will live for months like this, it will eventually rot unless the sprouts are allowed to grow above the surface.

    And http://www.plantgeek.net/plant-276.htm

I saw alot of them in the LFS, maybe they should remove it so as not to confuse us.

    Re: Help!

Let me clarify, I am not saying that the bamboo plant is causing the fish death. Just that if you are in this for the long term, consider removing the bamboo plant.

As mentioned above, you need to cycle the tank for 1 month and those fish require salt to do well. You need to read up on the nitrogen cycle and what are the requirements of the fish you have. In the mean time, it is advisable to change water frequently to remove Ammonia.

    Re: Help!

Ok, thank you, I plan to remove them as soon as they begin to rot, but so far they seem to be growing.

As far as the water changes, I've been doing 25% change every other day.
Guppies need salt? Can you point me somewhere where I can find out how much salt and what kind of salt to add. Also will it hurt my mollys and platys?

    Re: Help!

I've been hearing about adding salt to aquarium, even the aunty that sold me the fish also advise me to add salt. Do we really need salt even if the fishes are healthy?

    Re: Help!

After searching Google for "guppies salt", it seems salt is not mandatory but good to have to prevent illness. Molly and Platy are livebearer fish, same as guppies, so salt will be good for them too. I guess if your guppies are healthy, you don't need to add salt.

    Re: Help!

check your water; get API ammonia / pH test kit; if the ammonia level is high; do a 50% change of water everyday till your ammonia level reaches 0; in the meantime; remove any rotting plants.

Suggest you get hornworts / java moss as they're pretty easy to handle; grows pretty well even without lights. You'll need some effort on the java moss though.

For salts, use sea salts, NEVER table salts as the latter contains iodine which is harmful for the fish.
