    Depending on which type of lava rock you are using, the effect on pH may vary. I don't think they'll bring down the pH as fast as peat moss can. With peat, all you need is to pack them into a smaller filter bag, leave it in the tank and soon it'll cause the water to get a brownish tinge.

    ya pretty slow for lava rock..for 2 days notting change much.. peat do better, have try...

    Lava rock can lower pH? I thought they are suppose to be inert? neutral? Does not alter pH? I think its stated too on the box that they are inert.

    Some types of lava rock have an effect on pH, if information on the web is anything to go by. In my case, nothing beats peat or ketapang leaves when it comes to lowering pH.
