Hi guys, i have just flooded my tank yesterday after growing my HC emersed for 4weeks.

Here are the specs of my tank:

    Size: 60cmX29cmX33cm
    Lighting: 2x24Watt
    Gravel:ADA Aquasoil II + PowerSand
CO2: DIY with DIY Internal Reactor
    Cooling System: None/wind from window
    Temp:28-30
PH: Not sure, ph paper says 5-6
    Filter: EDEN 501
    Fertilizers: Excel and JBL Ferropol

    here are the pics :

The pic is a little bright as the sun was up and my lights were on aswell.
As you can see, the tank is a little cloudy, Known issue with ADA amazonia II soil. Im hoping that it would clear up after a few days.

here is the pic of my CO2 setup. DIY and giving a constant level of CO2 so far (2nd day) I attached the CO2 tubes to a gas control valve but i left it fully open due to the fear of high preassure build up. So far no fauna in my tank thus should be fine. You can see the internal reactor in the tank. Its doing a really great job, there is a constant fine mist of CO2 in the tank

And finally here are my HC that i waited 4weeks for them to grow roots to stay rooted when i plant them. Unfortunately some did float up but most of them stayed put . And their happily bubbling away! Im providing them with constant CO2 and excel. Read somewhere that the transition from Emersed to Submerge could fail if there isnt enough CO2. Hope that they wont melt on me though.

One issue i have with the tank is my christmas moss dont seem healthy. Their having a brownish dull green shade. Im worried that maybe my temperature or lighting is too high for them. Do advice

how about installing a fan? it will bring the temperature down to about 26C - 27C.

Re: First planted tank Update !

    Okay, time for update !

On third day after flooding, i came back and notice my HC are no long pearling. And some of them have started melting and some even have some white fungus thingy growing off them,

Is this something i should be concern with ? Do emersed to submerged process normally cause them to melt? or could it be the temperature, i came back today and notice my tank was at 32 celcius ! so quickly cool it down by placing a fan at it. its now 29 celcius but the HC are no longer pearling. Getting worried here

Any bro mind giving some pointers before i hit the panic button ?

Re: First planted tank Update !

My experience with HC tells me they do melt quite significantly when converting from emersed to submersed form. Some may argue otherwise though.

I'm not sure if temperature affects the growth of HC, but do try and keep the temperature down. Anything above 28 degreesC usually spells ALGAE in the near future.

Just a comment on the DIY CO2.

What type of control valve being used? Is it those used for air pumps?
If so, it won't control the flow. In fact, it could be a source of CO2 leakage. Usually the production of CO2 would stabilise itself after a few days, no need to regulate it.

Re: First planted tank Update !

    Hi guys !
Just to update more on my tank.

I Finnaly got a fan for my tank and it manage to bring the temp all the way to 27 Celsius (may be due to cold day today). But the good news is my HC has started pearling again. No longer as intense but there are some pearling.

The bad news is, i got my fan too late, and my Christmas moss have suffered badly from the high temperature. I would say their 95% dead. Most turn brownish green already. Going to rip them off this weekend i guess.

As for the regulator thing, its just the plastic connector that has the knob on it to open or close air flow. Its Terrible at regulating the preassure, so i only use it as on/off. Since there is two bottles, i use the knob so i can remove one of the bottles to replace or shake it. Then again i doubt its needed. IMO, its best to leave it completely open, there was once preassure build up in one of the bottles cause i attempted to regulate it. The bottle was hard to the touch, luckily i notice it before it exploded and cause a fountain of yeast and ethanol.

oh and i spotted two uninvited inhabitants in my tank, 2 snails of diff species. would they eat my HC? saw one of them crawling on some HC leaves. Surprisingly their alive considering im overdosing with excel.

my lesson from this is: High temp aka >30 celcius is bad for plants, thus a fan is highly recommended if your tank is in the way of the sun

Re: First planted tank Update !

oh and one more thing, the melting HC also seems to be promoting hair algae? fungus? growth. Which is damn annoying to look at as it makes my tank looks like a dying tank of plants. ( partly true though)

Anyone can suggest ways to remove them? pulling them off is a bad idea as i seem to have uprooted some HC in the process. Not really sure what they are but from my readings it most likely are hair algae.

Re: First planted tank Update !

    Hi there,

get some shrimps (amano) for a anti-algae team.
Some plants grow well in cooler conditions, moss especially.

About your DIY Co2, no matter what you do. There is still a spike of Co2 at the start and no way to control it, but it will stable down in a few days.

Can i request for a close-up of your reactor? i kinda like DIY stuff. Thanks

Re: First planted tank Update !

Blaze88, we're having same fate. I also having same problem with HC. It's growing but I scare those something like hair algae will take over it. I planted HC together with a few base sponge. I think those sponge rot and contribute hair algae?

I was thinking of adding Yamato Shrimps and Otos when my tank circle completed. But now HOW? Yamato Shrimp is no-no with HC? any advise?

Haha, guess we shall figure this out together then. One intresting thing that occur to me was, i observed some HC growing up vertically. Then on closer inspection, it looks a bit different from the other HC. I really think these are HM and guess i got some stranglers in the batch i bought.

But hair algae is really really annoying me. making my tank look like a rotting cess pool

worst come to worst black out for 3 days. It should kill any green hair algae but then you need to figure it out the root cause otherwise it will come back.

You can add Malayan or Cherry, not as effective that they will do.

Re: First planted tank Update !

Hi guys, back again, cleaned up the tank a little and rearranged the DW, removed the dead moss from the DW, though have plans to place moss or something else on them again. THe tank now looks like this:

As requested by bro Felix, here are some close up of my DIY internal Reactor|

Top view of the reactor. the white tube is the Co2 inlet while the green tube is the ventuuri tube.
This way the bubble goes directly into the venturi tube and into the pump to be blended into tiny bubbles
Side view of the reactor, you can see here the bubble is being swirled inside the reactor. if you are wondering that then no water will come out, they actually do, you could see the small gaps at where the pump is attached to the bottle. also from here the small bubbles escapes and float around the tank.

front view of the reactor, I know i know, the NUS thingy is damn ugly, plan to replace it with a saran wrap instead. but the cap thingy is useful, removing the cap allows alot of tiny bubbles out into the tank.

thats all for now. Just a note, if you want to see your plants pearling, reducing the flow or offing your filter. i could see many tiny bubbles released once i stop my filter.
