    as the topic suggests, is it ok to use a sponge filter for a 1.5 feet planted.. probably juz hv java ferns, moss n some low maintenance plants tat do not require co2

    Sponge filter -- attached to air-pump or powerhead? Air-pump will dissipate the CO2 from the water. Not too good for plants. Even low maintenance plants still need CO2.

    Errrr.... if it's using airpump, the co2 contents will equilibrate with the atmosphere rite? IMO, undemading plants should be able to survive but may grow very slowly.

    Juz curious, why do you want to use spong filter? Breeding?

    juz trying to re-do my breeding tank, make it more pleasing to the eye.
    also quite concerned abt the cost, so stick to the sponge filter (air pump). my air pump takes water out n flow back in, not the type that blows air bubbles right in.
    read that some bros hv success setting up small tanks w/o base fert n co2. any1 hv any views on this?
