A new species of freshwater snapping shrimp, Alpheus cyanoteles (Decapoda: Caridea: Alpheidae) from Peninsular Malaysia and a redescription of Alpheus paludicola Kemp. 1915.

BTW I heard this is being sold at Serangoon North for $65 a piece, have anyone seen it can confirm? It is highly endangered, please do not buy.

The eyes are recessed into the shell! Interesting!

No, the one at serangoon north is mini crayfish. they have equal-sized claws.

yes it is mentioned in the diagnostics, the carapace covers the eyes dorsally and laterally.

and this mini crayfish selling for $65!?

anyway the person who thought she saw this Alpheid on sale is a botanist, will not be surprised if she got confused

i am not sure, but i think it is cambarus ludovicianus, which is being sold at $70+ at c328.

was having dinner at serangoon north earlier, i think i saw something similar at serangoon north.. beside the pet clinic next to the bird shop..

not sure if it's the same species, as i didn't take a closer look at it because it was closing time..

are these freshwater?
i remember i caught something similar from 1 of the rivers around sengkang..
similar claws.. colour wise also quite similar..
size is around 3-4 inches.. i released them though..

yes this is true freshwater but most of the other Alpheids are brackish and marine. one of the well known ones are those pistol shrimps that cohabitates with coral fishes, the shrimps dig the burrow while the fish keeps a look out.

If you find something like this, the chances of course that it is one of the Macrobrachium, but also possible that it is one of the brackish Alpheus. I think A. paludicola can be found in Singapore.

But if in doubt, bring back and post here it could be a new record.
