Hi guys I've a 2 feet tank at home.. thinking of going into shrimp rearing.. I'm running on some submissible filter/pump and thats about it. say if i'm planning to get the normal cherry shrimps, is a chiller needed( i dun want my shrimps all to die)?? I've looking around and the prices of chillers are a KILLER.

    What plants are needed..

I've an inch deep of substrate so i guess thats fine..
    What else is needed??

Beginner only.. thanks in advance for any help!

if you rearing cherry shrimp then dont need to buy chiller unless you rearing crs.if you want to lower the temp you can get a fan instead.

Re: Need help in setting up a tank for shrimps

Had a few bad attempts at cherries but my current attempt seems fine.... they don't seem to be breeding but they are eating well and growing. Here what I am doing and know.

    Lots and lots of moss.
Active carbon in my filter and carbon bamboo tubes in the tank.
    I added bateria
    Cycled tank
No chiller and from what I read cherries can take temps up to 30 but that value worries me. My tank averages at 26-28, lower when aircon is on of course. They survived a 2 week period without aircon before....and so far things seem fine.
As you mention chiller is damn expensive but it does help in survival and breeding rates
Fan can help a bit but makes the water evaporate faster so i stopped

cherries are easy to breed just give them some time to stablise in ur tank first. dont rush, no point getting chillers for cherries if you just want them to breed. temp fluctuation seems ok for cherries so dont need to worry so much. just be patient and you will be rewarded.

Re: Need help in setting up a tank for shrimps

ty! and i'm thinking of getting one of these

    Eheim Liberty 100 (2040):
    • For aquariums up to approx. 20 gal (75 L)
    • Pump output 100 gph (380 lph)
    • Dimensions (L x W x H): 5.25" x 4" x 7"
    • Weight: 1.2 lbs
    Eheim Liberty 150 (2041):
    • For aquariums up to approx. 35 gal (130 L)
    • Pump output 150 gph (570 lph)
    • Dimensions (L x W x H): 5.25" x 5.75" x 7"
    • Weight: 1.5 lbs
not sure if they're being sold in singaproe but pump output means? litres per hour?? which is better? higher or lower for shrimps

Re: Need help in setting up a tank for shrimps

For all the new shrimps lovers

    FILTER-

For your 2 feet tank, what you need is a Hang On Filter like GEX M-size or small canister like Eden 501. Load them up with Bio Rings for the biological filtration. As for mechnical filtration, you will have this sponge cover for your in flow to act as one. If you wants to plant non-rooted plants, i would suggest you to use Under Gavel Filter to eliminate the use of the bulky sponge for the inflow.

    Flora-

Most hobbist who keep shrimps will usually keep their tanks with moss only. There are different types of mosses, fissdens and pellias to choose from. They are slow growing ( depends one the types also ) so that you won't need to trim them like every month.

    Cooling / Temperature-

Usually temperature is the killer for shrimps. Most shrimps needs cool water to survive (< 28 degree C ). The cheapest way to cool your tank is to find the shadiest ( coolest ) part of your house, with a fan blowing across the surface of the tank water. The temperature of the tank will drop to like -4 degree C from the ambiance temperature. Most shrimp keeper will use chiller because it won't factuate the temperature too much ( bad for sensative shrimps like CRS )

    Water Parameter-

A test kit is a must. All shrimps needs specific pH, GH and KH. Dechlorinater is a must. Shrimp can't tolerate chlorine in their water column. Have patience and cycle your tank fully before you put any shrimps in.

    -Hope they breed for you-

Thanks!!! regarding the flowrate, how much is an overkill for shrimps? how much is too little?

Re: Need help in setting up a tank for shrimps

As for shrimp only tank, people will go for 4 time fitration rate. That means 100 litre of water in tank, going thru the canister or hang on filter 4 times ie the flowrate of the filter is 400litres per hour.

you can always adjust the waterflow for a HOF filter like GEX.
    cheers.

    1) GEX is a hang on filter (HOF) - Eden 501 is a mini canister filter

    2) snails are dual-sex - they can mate with themselves so 1 snail also can breed. you can try nerites, the eggs don't hatch in freshwater.

    3) best to have a few otos since they are schooling fish.

    cheers

Re: Need help in setting up a tank for shrimps

I am also a beginner but have tried cherries, sakuras and CRS before. I find cherries/sakuras very much more hardy than CRS. Have seen people who has breed them very successfully without any chiller or fan. Personally, I have used a small fan (27-29degC), partly also because I thought my plants needed cooler water. I guess the most important is to have a well cycled stable system, be patient to build up a good biofilter. I used Gex (red) soil to maintain a soft water condition; although I think cherries actually may not need very low pH like CRS. I think, typically you may need about 1 - 2 weeks to cycle your tank properly.
I noticed that my cherries are happier and breed better when I have more moss.
    Good luck

thanks! u guys are really helpful i'll try to get the GEX filter, what's its price range?

and I knew that snails were dual sex but i always thought they need two to breed. hmmmm interesting.i didnt know they could self fertilise LOL
