How do you go about treating diseases?

Care to share how you actually treat diseases?
as in, do you systematically identify the type of disease, then place in the correct medication?
just anyhow pour a general purpose medication?
do you put in a dose for bacteria + a dose for fungus + a dose for parasites? "hack care, kill all" attitude?

or just leave the diseased fishes to die and buy another batch?

Identify first, and attempt to treat the sick fish in a separate hospital tank. If that fails, I am prepared to see it die. Better 1 dead fish than an entire tank down with an epidemic.

Always underdose slightly when it comes to aquarium medication. Overdosing can have catastrophic consequences. General purpose medications are terrible. I remember buying those cheap fish medication with some funny illustrations on the bottle wrapper. Aquori or something, I don't remember. After that was some other brand, probably locally made.

If the disease is untreatable, or usually has a very slim chance of recovery, I let nature take its course. Diseases like dropsy, internal bacteria infections, fungus (especially mouth fungus), I usually do not bother to treat, because they are difficult to combat.

Some disease like parasite or bacterial can be treated, so you should attempt to. However viral, genetic, organ failure or cancer/tumour/we can expect the worst to happen and usually nothing we can do.

i read that if your fishes show unusual behaviour, the 1st thing to try is to put the fishes in separate container, then add an appropriate amount of salt water for a "salt bath". 30-40 minutes will do...

Actually, it depends on the value of the fishes you are keeping. Why not be frank? Like us human (not all of course), Tend to be selfish. Example, if you found that there is some kind of issue happening to your "Arowanas", will you spend your time figuring out what's going on? Of course you do. But in other way round, let's say you found that there's something wrong with your "Red Platy" or "Guppy"............... Well, will you spend so much time and MONEY to cure? If your INTEREST is really on this two fishes that I've mentioned, I believe you will, else...... who cares? Agree?

the reason i posted this is that i find it very hard to differentiate the causes of some diseases such as fin/tail rot. not sure whether is fungal or bacterial.
had the fishes suffer for 2 weeks before recovering.

I had a male guppy whose tail "melted" and something whitish came out from it's tummy and it was paralysed and died within hours; the paralysation was somewhat like swim bladder inflammation but what puzzled me was the whitish and longish thing that came out from it's tummy; what kind of disease is that?

May I add that the best way to put the fish to sleep if you cannot treat it, is to slowly chill it until it dies...to be 100% sure, I normally throw the dead fish into the freezer afterwards before disposal

From my point of view (goldfish hobbyist), the first thing to do is to perform a water change and if necessary, more number of water changes. Then, observe within the next 24hrs whether symptoms persist, the behavior of fish, and the poo of fish. If I find a real cause for alarm, then use medication. And always keep in mind I'm a hobbyist - not a doctor - so, if in doubt, I go to a forum to ask for help.
