What then? Tekan (Torture) the fish by buying 10 fish then use super glue to stick the number? Wahh....like fish taking IPPT (Physical Fitness Test) like that.

Or water proof marker, just write directly on the fish? Maybe some will use Luminous Pen to write.

[ The above is just kidding, please do not attempt this in real life. ]

They won't be gone....just under water forest. Remember 2012? We get washed by Tusnami. Ha ha...ever wonder how you will die comes 2012? Maybe get wash away by Tusnami or be bitten into half by crocodile (East Coast), or maybe earthquake, the building come down on us, chop of one hand, but not dead. Worst, kena (being) eaten alive by other human because there is no more food?

    Oh that's another story altogether...

In any case, that's the world's most expensive pet dog. These BKK shrimps are probably the holy grail of shrimps for any shrimp keeper.

    @silane:

I do agree with you, that it takes dedication and a lot of effort to keep these special shrimp, but in the end it is still a game of who has the rarest pet shrimp, at least for the Japanese.

Going into the wilderness and taking out some creatures are removing these creatures from their natural habitals. I don't know if I will do that when i'm in such situation.

I think it is more humane to keep those that are breed by humans, as these lives are more adjusted to the environment we are in, than like what Brian (in the link you provided) is venturing into. I'm not against what he is planning to do. At least he had done relevent homework, understanding the environment the creatures live in, before making attempts to bring it out, with the required factors.

To me, a life be it big or small, is a life.

Not that I am going to give an arm or limp to get these mutated shrimps. I will only buy and keep them if it is affordable to me. The rest, I will just appreciate.

Money is inmaterial to those who could afford it comfortably. It's like those who can comfortably afford and drives a million dollar car vs those driving an average day to day car. I can't even afford a brand new car.

you don't understand. when I say collection I am referring to a scientific expedition, not you and I going into the longkang to scoop fish for the aquarium.

actually I am not too interested to get the creatures to keep, I am interested in the discovery. I'd rather they live in their original habitat, but this is a harsh reality, the natural world is going going gone.

like that you cannot be a taxonomists when we catch these creatures the primary aim is to grant them immortality ;@) in 95% ethanol. I am not suggesting you should do that, just to point out the different reasons why people go to collect specimens.

I understand where you are coming from.

I'm just voicing out opinions, begining from high priced shrimps to new discovery. Be it high price shrimps, formerly flowerhorn or arowanas, they have their reasons and there will be appreciators who will be willing to part money for these.

On new discoveries. It is interesting to find new species. Not sure if you do have an interest in the deep oceans. I tried to search for creatures of the deep sometime ago and found these wierd (since it's not commonly seen) fishes or sea creatures catching my attention. There are so many spieces of life that have yet to be discovered.

Re: Barbour's Seahorses and Black King Kong Shrimps

    Choy, thumbs up. =)

Generally I do agree with Choy more. Fishes such as Luohan are created as a trend and also from the point of commercial value. I do keep Luohan once but that was because I saw it half dead in a plastic bag broken, so I decided to buy it home at QianHu. Not so much to catch on, on the trend.

I do think we must have compassion, those fish in the wild should stay in their natural habitat. 60% of the Amazon is currently adopted either by Companies or Locals, leaving the other 40% unprotected or up for grab so to speak. Should watch Discovery or History Channel more often. =)

Ya, for these rare shrimps, you can't stop at by owning them, but to breed them. Breeders shut their mouth on the water parameters of these shrimps and Japaneses are really brave collectors, they imported hundreds and hundreds to try to breed them even without asking about how the water parameter.

I was in Guangzhou pet fair, there are a few Japanese bred nice CRS, priced $US3500. I don't think they will find another Tibetan Mastiff owner.

Re: Barbour's Seahorses and Black King Kong Shrimps

According to that news report, these Black King Kong require a certain temperature to successfully molt. What do you think the key temperature is silane? I'm thinking it's around 24 deg C.

Same thing in toy collecting. The Japanese have no qualms about paying big bucks for rare vintage pieces, so the shrimp price is not surprising.

Re: Barbour's Seahorses and Black King Kong Shrimps

To be frank, from Jiang Hu time roughly Cheng Dynasty period, Japanese have been cross Kois. That started the first fish trade back then. I'd read up on books, I mean paperback books on these.

Cross breeders are really hard working people, I don't have anything bad to say about them. But I do oppose those "scientific" people who inject luminous chemicals into fish and claimed they have successfully created a new breed.

So what about Luohan? If you cross a luohan with luohan, nothing wrong. You cross a luohan with a parrot? I'd puke on that.

your numbers are highly suspect. if 60% of the amazon is protected we would not have to fret so much. do you have a source?

BTW Discovery and History channels are meant to entertain the serious lay person.

one should bear in mind why they are rare. for example, Rembrandts are worth a lot, but doodling by HWChoy is even rarer

Re: Barbour's Seahorses and Black King Kong Shrimps

Stormhawk, for the exact temperature, or there isn't one, I can hint you that the anscenstor of such shrimps came from cold water mountain creek, the water is cooler then what we are keeping shrimps in general for most people even in summer when the air temperature is reaching 30C.

Choy, I love both Discovery Channel and Gossip fish magazine or news report. Rembrandts species is really rare, I have not heard anything about it nor knowing anyone keeping one.

Blue Whale, You want to see cross a luohan with a parrot? You got it. The show displayed some parrot body shape flowerhorn, it is not my cup of tea, never like anything form of physical new creation.

Re: Barbour's Seahorses and Black King Kong Shrimps

So basically, the bit about the "exact" temperature is probably a lie spread by the breeders, and they just require a cooler tank to survive and breed in.

I love Discovery, National Geographic and the History channel, but unfortunately I don't have cable, so I have to rely on Okto for my dose of documentaries. Maybe later on I'll get cable..

Re: Barbour's Seahorses and Black King Kong Shrimps

JY, try to get "Lost Land of the Jaguar" and "Lost Land of the Volcano" (the first one set in the Guyana forest and the second in PNG). they are presented in a expedition reality-show type format, with a lot of breathtaking landscapes and quite a bit of fishes. Again its not up to the same standards as reading your papers, and none of them used any Latin :gin:

Not a lie, but I think could be a translation problem or even a preception problem. See the report, "30 year of keeping king kong experience" could be "3 years of keeping kong kong experience" or "30 years of keeping fish experience". I know Wu personally, so know she has 30 years of commerical breeding experience. Noone has seen her setup, so can't really tell which temperature or perhaps guess what temperature she is keeping them at. Her tanks appeared in magazine were temperory setup for the purpose and even asked her younger brother to appear.
