ur water parameters? once my guppy fries died oso cos the fish food powder apparently is expired or something then the food expand in the fry and killed it
I had a tankful of 16 fries given birth over 3 batches, but this evening, only 3 are surviving!
Tank is 6" bare except for java moss and a red ramshorn snail. They were near surface but not moving as actively this morning.
Should I add filter to prevent such deaths in future? Could they have died cos of dirty water?

I suspect it could be due to dirty water; they pooed alot and tank was without pump...
Best food for fries are live food, microworms and decap bbs. Less food leftover and good growth rate. I suspect its your water problem. Water change daily or once every 2 days 10%. Will help. Then 30% WC every week. No filter required.
do you suck up the dirt from bottom of the tank whenever you change water? Should water level be 1/2 tank only?
Your tank is 6inch? If so, just pour 3/4 of the undisturbed water into a pail and dump the rest. Then add 1/4 of conditioned water to the 3/4. There goes. The rotten food usually sit at the bottom.
thanks Terence; do you think it's a good idea to have hang on fiilter and covered suction with sponge to and minimal flow power on the knob to help maintain water quality?
For cleaning, use a tube suck the floor bed. Squeeze one end to avoid sucking baby. It will still happen though...accidentally. As you can see, you can't exactly use a filter there.
Baby guppies are kept in tank without soil/sand. You have to cover them from lizards. If you need to aerate the tank, just insert a tube with a tap, gentle bubbling.
If you can, buy baby food No. 2 which are very fine pellets for food.
I believe both food and aeration is the main problem here. 20 years ago my dad was into rearing guppies, we had about few hundreds of them...keep giving birth. So had some experience with it. My dad don't rear fish anymore, after he saw my planted tank..hee.
Thanks Bluewhale. What about the population? Anything to take note especially the no of fish per gallon ratio?
U can keep fries even in tau huey container. Just keep a few in one, no need filter, change water 10% daily. When they are older, then transfer them to big tanks. Feed live food to enhance their growth rate.
If your tank is 30cm. You keep fries, some will die along the way so really there is no ratio here. You are looking at how much how frequent the female give birth. What if there are two batch of fries instead of one? Then you keep them seperately, not together.
When the fries are small you don't feed live worms. The live worms might end up choking them to death. That is why Baby Food No.2 which I got from Serangoon, one of the wulu wulu shop away from rainbow which sells cheap fish food.
If the tank is clear enough, you can put some 50-100 fries together also no problem. So make sure not to put too much obstacles.
Live tubifex worms, or chopped up bloodworm. Daphnia/Moina is best.

If you added bicarbondate of soda, $1 per small bottle (supermarket), the
water gets hardened like well water, when this happens, the ph do not
drop that fast, all you need to do is to control the temperature make sure
it does not rise so fast. I got mine at a small store in the market, usually cheaper; one time you might want to stock up two bottles, used up quite fast.
Guppies are usually differentiated by colors. The males are more colorful. But smaller ones might take some time. If they are very tiny, use baby food. Both Serangoon (Hougang Ave. 2/3, small fish shops) and Yishun Aqua Trading, they have these in stock, you'd have to walk around. Okay, you would recognise Tetra micro pellets; effectively the baby food are also micro pellets and much much finer, almost in powder form. So you use small plastic spoons (not disposable ones) to feed the babies. You can find this in hardware shops which are selling the chinas. They have plastic spoon for soya saurce, you can use those...usually in a bunch, doesn't cost you a bomb to buy it also. Extra spoon can be used for the kitchen.
Gender differentiation in young guppy doesn't necessarily require colour. Looking at their anal fin is enough. Males have a narrow anal fin that eventually turns into a gonopodium. This gonopodium is fairly flexible.. males can rotate it left and right.![]()
Females have a normal fan? shaped anal fin. In fancy strains, it is not uncommon to come across females with more colours in the tail.

Just check if they have the gravel spot. They are females if the graval spot is there. 3 weeks to 1 month u should be able to sex them already.
Guppy fries can be fed with tubi after a few days of birth. In my opinion, liquid fry no 1 or 2 foul water and hence water change need to be more frequent and more. For better growth rate, try tubi, daphnia, decap bbs or bbs.
Storm, Terence,
wahh....guppies sexual stuffs...I usually lookout for more distinct feature but since it was many years ago, I kinda forgot most of the features. Don't think I will repickup that knowledge again, since I am not really into guppies, only can remember what we used to did last time.
I think I will leave the sex lesson to both of you..ha ha...should be interesting, but seriously my dad and I don't sex them even after few weeks. They do community together, as in grow up together. So what we do is observe which one is likely to be pregnant. Then the pregnant one will be transfer to a waiting area.
Once one of the pregnant ladies gives birth, the fries will be transfer to the baby tank. These two tanks are basically covered to avoid lizards from picking snacks. So we are looking at 30cm tanks x 3 at least arranged top down on the rack.
