I am a newbie to aquascaping and i have just bought a new tank and filter but my concerns is whether or nt the filter(boyu ef-05) is too strong for a 1feet cube tank. If so are there any adverse effects of having too strong a filter?

if your water flow is too strong in the tank, the fish might get stressed out. also, your substrate would get stirred up and eventually dirty your water.

a rule of thumb is to get a filter that cycles your entire tank volume 2-3 times an hour.

e.g. if your tank is 100 litres, get a 250-300 lph (litre per hour) filter.

I think the filtration rate should fine. It is just how you position the outlet pipes. I like to keep my filtration at five times my aquarium water per hour. The rate of your filter is 160l/h. So it should be about 6 times your aquarium water. I have a my filter going at 800l/h for my 80L tank.

Re: Filter to tank size porpotion

So by the sounds of it the filtration rate for my tank now seems fine. i did the calulations. my tank's water capacity roughly measures to 30liters and the filter rate is 200liters/hr so this gives me 6.66 times. but my neon tetras seem to be tyring to fight the current so my primary concern is whether or not it will eventually tire them out and kill them.

    Thanks for the HELP!

maybe you can use a rainbar to diffuse the water output? i saw a rainbar fixture for $3.50 (price tag) at C328 last night.

Re: Filter to tank size porpotion

i have just installed the rainbar and tilted the outlet pointing upwards. Glad to say it is working! the tetras are swimming higher now. thanks for all the help !

ps: just notice another trick unplugging the rubber stopper at the tip of the rainbar also helps decreased the water current
