For DIY CO2, may not need to off at night. Just monitor the CO2 level first after lights off and before lights on. It the level is ok (<30ppm). Just leave it on continuosly.

Test for KH and pH, compare to CO2 chart like this one.

to test you'll need to purchase test kits.
for ph you have a choice of test kit or test pen.
what's the size of your tank?
don't think you need to worry about overdosing co2 with diy co2. most cases, it will be under dosing, you can leave the co2 on 24/7. just check if your fishes gasp for air in the morning just before the lights are switched on. if they don't, there is nothing to worry.

nutrafin ... hmmzzz...after trying for 2 months ... i think is quite a waste ... hmmzzz... i think DIY ourself is better ... i always switch on the light during the first 1½ wks ... when the nutrafin bubble kept on coming out ... den slowly dun hab any liaoz ...
the nutrafin co2 set is just a beautifully packaged diy co2. it saves the trouble of diy. and the ingredients are pre-packaged. no need to measure the quantities.
anyway, diy co2 mixture has to be remixed every 2-4 weeks.

precisely , you buy the nutrafin package for the hardware (flipper and bottle), afterwhich, you can diy your own mixture once you run out.
go read up on it. (some people are able make it last for 1 month or more using jello instead of sugar)
