I hav enever seen current tied to algae. You wnat to moderate teh current in your tank for two reasons.
1) some plants do not have strong enough roots to be planted in a current
2) you can tire some fish to the point of death if the current is too strong.
I have a VERY high flow rate in my tank, but the current is strong in only one portion. The fish have the choice to surf the current as they chooose but they can also rest on 70% of the tank.
In front of the flow I have plants that root very deeply, but the rest of the flow goes out into a void of open space.
