your tank can't be considered as low tech if you use 2x24W T5HO

if you want to have low tech tank, then yes, you can turn off the other light. If not, you will need CO2 and Fertilizer dosing.

once you start on co2 you might be "hooked" hehehe and end up getting a cylinder and regulator and spend more and more and more and more money,

try low-tech and see how it goes lah bro. the plants will grow damn slow, but they WILL grow and you don't have to spend so much time on maintenance too.
    Yecch!

Tenellus for foreground since you have good light and soil, a few assorted crypts will round it up nicely. Personally I would not be so concerned about algae, shrimps will take care of it.

Re: need advise on choice of low tech plant

oh! with 2x24w T5 is not considered low tech? even though there's no co2, minimal fert dosing and no chiller? hehe... asking as i'm in the same situation too, and scratching my head for a "low tech" foreground plant for a 2ft . will reduced lighting hours help to invite less algae (have cleaning crew working too)?

already have some of the plants suggested, ie. java fern as background, and e.tenellus more of mid ground, as i'm afraid they may grow quite tall?

still the foreground..... looked at some crypts, but thought they could grow pretty large too?

have tried taiwan moss before as foreground, am thinking of trying something else....

Re: need advise on choice of low tech plant

okie, so what exactly is the definition of low tech and high tech?
ciaossu -- hehe for my tank, cause i didnt want use CO2 and all..initially i made a moss wall as the back drop, followed by moss on bog wood, then moss tied to charcoal tube at the front. tall to short, back to front. and its totally moss, just diff types. eg christmas, spiky, weeping, java and flame. i used this ikea table lamp for lighting, switched to 1foot double tube T5

Re: need advise on choice of low tech plant

definition is based on light intensity. Normally high tech light intensity is more than 3WPG and low tech is less than 2WPG. Note WPG does not work in small tank nor very big tank.

Everything is start with light. No light all your plant will die. Low tech is the situation where your light low enough so that you do not need CO2 injection and fert dosing but high enough for plant to survive.

Re: need advise on choice of low tech plant

That the difficult part. Let say 2gallon tank (30x15x17cm). If you follow WPG, you need only 6 Watts. The reality is with 6Watt you probably can grow only moss.

Re: need advise on choice of low tech plant

ok thanks bro Shadow. so my situation is like "half-bucket" of high tech.. or not even near, haha .

ok, will have to experiment and see what plants i can grow without co2 and with algae in check.
