Looks like a type of rotala, emersed form. Converting to submerged so the rotting is considered normal.
I don't think that's the correct way to plant rotala.

They had been dying off and not much left on the wire mesh. What could be the cause?

The rotalas were fine initially but started decomposing recently. Any recommendations to type of midground plants? Foreground plants I'm using are Cryptocoryne Parva.
