Initially thought I bought a pair of Apistogramma Panduro, but after much comparison, I have gotten a pair of Apistogramma Nijsenni. Attached are the pictures of the male and female, sorry that they are poorly taken as I am still learning how to take pictures from inside my aquarium.

They are housed in a 2ft tank with neon tetras and cherry barbs, provided with 2 ceramic caves and a inverted coconut husk. Lets see what the pair chooses.

You are probably correct on the ID. The fish seem stressed at the moment, so it would be wise to leave them alone to explore the tank and settle down. Your "female" could be a sneaker male. I've kept nijsenni before and the female never seemed to have blue markings on the cheeks.

Yup, they looked better this morning.. Hope the female is truly one.. The blue markings could be due to the reflecting of my blue LED lighting that I have on 24hrs.. Shall attempt another picture tonight or tomorrow morning with the LEDs off...

When they are in breeding mode, the female will chase away any and every other fish from the area fairly viciously.

Your tetras and barbs will be fine, but watch the corys. Some apistos will beat up on corys if they come too close or enter their territory.
Was observing them last night, the female seemed more docile, while the male was doing short chases of the tetras, and even the cherry barbs this morning. He did not seem to be bothering the corys or clown loach..

Like I mentioned, the aggression differs from individual to individual. If your female nijsenni starts to form the brooding colouration, then be prepared to see them spawn.

I see, however, when I was home last night, only could see one fella swimming around, this morning as well, thus managed to take a slightly clearer picture. No idea where the partner hiding or disappeared to.

Blue LEDs are off, can help me ID? Thanks!

It might have dug underneath a driftwood or one of the rocks in the tank. I would advise you to check for the other fish ASAP. If it died and you didn't notice the dead body, it can pollute the tank.

Cannot positively ID that female until it develops brooding colours. It does seem skinny. You might want to give it some live BBS or adult BS to build some bulk.

Will try to do some digging later, the female gobble a little frozen mysis a while ago... Hope she eats more...

If she's eating you have little to worry about. Good luck finding the missing fish.

    Hi bro,

Don't be panic. What filtration are you using? Would it be stuck at the filter?

Side track a bit, the substrate in your tank from 1st picture seems quite sharp. Ok for your cories?

Juwel in-built bio-filter. Nope, not inside, grooves too small to go in...
Cories are fine with the black quartz/soil mix...

For the rio-400 built-in filter you got to take note of the base of the filter as it is not extended fully onto the tank base . Once I experience my lower xingu fry dug a hole through the substrate & hiding under the filter for days. Initially I thought it was missing, after doing a revamp for the tank then found him.

Hmm... as my tank is the Rekord 60, the gap from the filter to the base of the tank is really small, and i remember stuffing it with black foam prior to topping up with substrate...

Bought a pair of Agassizii "Red" instead when I went back to Wuhu intending for another pair of Nijsenni. For my 2ft tank, is it advisable to add another pair of Nijsenni? Making it a pair of A. Agassizii + a trio of A. Nijsenni?

Maybe it would be fine if your 2 footer is densely planted with lots of caves & hiding places but do consider in future when they spawn.
