Bought a new male A. Nijesseni and added to my office tank on last Thursday. On Friday, brought the "female" from home and tried to match-make the pair. Upon entering office today, saw the bigger male chasing the "female" around the tank. Guess it's normal right? The male bother the neon tetras though.

Tried feeding them frozen mysis, but they did not bother. Thus, bought frozen BW during lunch to give it a go. They seem to like it a lot more.

    Bro,

You bought your Nijesseni from wuhu? I was there also on wed last week, saw 2 pair of very nice red faced viejita.

Seek ben's advice for partition of my 2 ft tank to house 2 pairs of apistos but he don't really seems to agree with the idea. Thats why did not purchase the viejita.

    Wonder it is still there?

Yup, got 2 male + 1 "female" A. Nijsenni from Ben. Waiting for the "female" to reveal its true colors.

Think I saw that there was 1 pair of Viejita left.

Don't seems to be a female.
but some female will lose their traits marking at times.
But i noticed most of your apistogramma always took picture in stressed condition.
    Is your lighting too strong?

    Re: Apistogramma nijsenni

This "female" has been chased around by the male... which instead has black markings on the ventral fins... They are in a 1.5' tank since last friday, with a few neon tetras only... thus should not have any reason for stress... maybe i should add some blackwater...

I hope the A. Agassizii pair on the link below do not appear too stressed.. they are eating very well...

Reduce the stress by housing this fish separately. Female or not. If you feed it well, and if it is truly a female, it will come into breeding condition sooner or later.

A brooding female from the nijsenni group is a sight to behold.

Thanks bro, guess I shall bring the "female" home this weekend. One thing though, only males flare at the mirror? Or both sexes do?

    Re: Apistogramma nijsenni

Instead of bringing the "female" home, I transferred the male out to my colleague's tank, filled with goldfishes and tiger barbs... Now the "female" had the 1.5' tank all to "herself"...

    Re: Apistogramma nijsenni

Both sexes do flare at a mirror. I have a pair of wilhelmi or sp. "Abacaxis" if you follow the DATZ book, and both male and female do flare when they spot their reflection. The difference is, the male tends to get more aggressive towards its reflection, as compared to the female.

I also have a pair of Apistos, that do not flare at the mirror, no matter how I position it. They'll flare against a neighbouring pair, but never at the mirror.

Thanks for your patient explaination bro! Still observing the "female", more stable alone in the tank, quite a few say s/he's a male...
