Hi guys, I'm planning on setting up a 3-5Gal species only low-tech tank for some ANNs. Haven't gotten the fish yet. Wanted to prepare and cycle the tank before getting them.

Which substrate do they do best with? (I know they hover at the top though)

And for plants and decor, I'm getting driftwood, java/windelov ferns and java moss.

    Thanks in advance!
    Bern

From memory, they do fine with lapis gravel, or even the black GEX soil for shrimps and plants. It is vital to give them some floating plants. They particularly like to stay beneath frogbits.

Bare-bottomed tank with lots of moss, detritus, mulm, floaters and a simple air-lift sponge filter is more than adequate. What's more important is their diet and conditioning (if you intend to breed them). You might want to consider a tank cover since ANNs are proficient jumpers!

Used to have a large group in a 2ft planted low-maintenance display tank but I hardly see any fry. Those in shallow Rubbermaid/Tupperware/Toyogo containers did much better although it wasn't easy spotting the adults. Then again, it didn't bother me because they were breeding like waabbits!!

One day... one day... I'm gonna get me some ANNs...

    Thanks Ronwill!

And since you already know that you're going to get them anyway, why not start now? Haha. It's going to happen anyway right? ANNs are addictive

The ANNs I want... are not what most folks will be willing to pay for and Stormhawk is probably the only one who knows what I'm talking about!!

Like I said, one day... one day...

    Hi Ron

That`s not the ones from Monrovia are they ,, bit like hen`s teeth they are.
Got the usual form and aggree about the tank conditions that you state ,, only thing that MUST be insured is that the cover is really tight with no gaps as they will find the smallest gap and don`t look good when dried out.
