Awesome apisto & rams you got there, not forgetting fine photography too![]()
Been some time since I last posted. Here are some of my apisto photo in 2ft community tank. Apologies for the poor quality shots from my camera phone.
Bitaeniata paraccuba pair spawned but fry all gone and female passed onFortunately, I'm able to get replacement from a nice bro in the forum. New female is only 1.5cm and always hidding so not able to snap a photo.
German ram pair yet to spawn; but I'm not hopeful any fry will survive even if they do spawn as the ruby and ember tetras that I have in the tank will make quick meals of them.
Doubt the colours can be further enhanced as I'm feeding solely on NLS 0.5 pellet, hikari carnivore pellets and hikari algea wafers. Only rare occassion if I happen to pass by C328, then they get daphnia. Comments are welcome.

Nice fish you got there Tony.
I don't think C328 sells Daphnia. The ones in the bags in red colour swimming around are either live adult brine shrimp, or baby brine shrimp (pinkish-orange colour) . Live Daphnia are very difficult to come by. I think only Lam Hong in AMK or Y618 stocks them.

Fish.. Simply Irresistable
Back to Killies... slowly.
The ones I got from C328 are pale birch colour and micro sized. Was told by the uncle they are daphnia when I asked for daphnia. Thanks for enlightening. Nonetheless, any live food besides blood worm should be good for apisto I guess
Have thought about buying frozen daphnia; but is a no go for me to put them in my fridge.![]()
Bro, care to share a full tank shot? Am looking for ideas as i'm also using a 2' tank...
They don't know the difference between Daphnia and BBS.
TBH, live Daphnia is way better than BBS. They stay alive in freshwater, and the adults will reproduce with live young constantly. Great for fry tanks and a supply of live food.
Don't buy frozen daphnia. Most of the time it's just the shells. My fish all ignored the frozen daphnia I got for them. Only my snails went for them. The only frozen food I use is UVX bloodworms from Hikari.

Haven't tried Mysis yet. I might give it a try later on. For now, they're hooked on frozen bloodworms. I feed my juvenile trifasciata with chopped up bloodworms. If the mysis don't turn out to be just shells like the frozen daphnia, I'll give the juveniles a try of that.

Haha... It might cloud the water a little from the small bits, but they are definitely not just shells...![]()
The other option will be adult brine shrimp, most lfs like c328, y618 sell them. They contains a trace amount of astaxanthin, which will enhanced the red spectrum of your fish. Also, the high protein level will ready the fish for spawning.
Thanks all, for your comments. Frozen stuff is out because no go for me to put them in my fridge.![]()
As storm has pointed out, my occassional treats to them is BBS. At the moment, I'm also testing out Tropical Spirulina flakes 36% pure alegae for them. Read that spirulina is good for fish.
A shot taken of the full tank here as requested.
Thanks for sharing bro! Looks very cozy for them. You use CO2 for this tank?
Adult brine shrimp are live food, they look reddish and of size 5mm to 10mm. Can survive in saltwater for several days.
If you search around this forum, NLS pellets is recognized as the best "color enhancing" food for apisto so far. So, i think your feed to the fishes quite ok. Just that, their genes limiting the color or they are mature enough.
Spirulina enhanced the blue/green color of the fishes. Astaxanthin (natural algae like spirulina) enhanced the red/orange spectrum. You might want to read more on this.
As for bringing out the best color of your fishes, you can always find the answer in many posts of this forum
- good food, clean water, suitable pH range, dark substrate, lots of hiding place.
What about filtration? Canister or sump?
1 x Rena XP2 canister, rainbar facing out
1 x Dolphin C-500 canister, rainbar facing into the wall of tank
Both with tap to limit the flow. This was previously a goldfish tank, so over-filteration is norm
After the rescape, both canister filters serve me well by keeping the water crystal clear.
GEX soil with root monster and JBL ferrotabs. A bit of hair algae can be seen; but can be easily plug off manually.
Nicely done bro! Too bad I can't afford the space for this kind of setup. Only got a 2'... Yesterday setup another 1'... =p
