The last pic can confirm it is a female.

Hi All,
I'm still new in apistogramma this sp. But the picture posted below are all Trifasciata
Can anybody help me to differentiate the sex of this one ? male or female ?
Sorry for the blurr picture
Picture 1 & Picture 2 is the same fish
I'm pretty sure this is female right ?
thanks

The last pic can confirm it is a female.

looks like a young male to me. The dorsal fin started to be pointy.

Yup first picture is male. Final shot is definitely female.

First one: Looks likes a tri. female.
Second one: Caca Female
Thrid One: Looks Like female but long ventral. Unless able to provide species.

Current tank: 1 4 tier 3ft fish rack
Livestock: WC Ivanacara Adoketa, WC Apistogramma Kelleri 'Red Cheeks', A , WC Apistogramma Mendezi, WC Apistogramma Cruziero, WC Apistogramma Elizabethae and WC Biotoecus Operularis.

My take: First picture shows the beginnings of a ray extention - male
3rd Picture:Female, because yellow mating dress. Possibility of it being a sneaker male is still there, though, as shown in the rather long ventral fins.

Some females are known to have some long ventrals. I was surprised to see my own trifasciata female, having some longer ventrals than I'd expect for a female. But at her size, I guess anything is possible.
foxngn, can you try and make the fish in the 3rd picture flare? Once we see the dorsal fin extended, we can give you a better guess on the sex of the fish.

Ok.. i try my best to let it flare..
Usually both female & male apisto also flare one is it ?

Yes, depending on their mood. My female bitaeniata is non-aggressive, so she doesn't flare. But most of my other females will flare whenever they see the mirror.
Either that or you wait to see it spread the fins. If you see any dorsal fin extensions, especially on the 3rd dorsal ray, you might have a sneaker male. Though I doubt it since that fish in the 3rd pic has very little facial markings.

Hi All,
Jeez.. is quite hard to get them flare, until i dunno which is which already.
Any, this is the best i can get the female flaring already, it don't flare on mirror.
Here's, another one, which i think supposely is male. Which is the same as picture 1 & picture 2

You really do have a male and female pair. The young male is already developing the long ventrals. Just keep feeding them heavily.![]()

Pump them up with frozen blood worm. haha.![]()

Just siphon out any uneaten food at the end of the day, or just let the fungus do the work. I tend to keep an Otocinclus in the tank with them as a scavenger, since they feed on almost everything I feed my Apisto.

I have no idea how long it takes for them to reach maturity. If fed well, they will grow bigger faster. They can breed earlier, but the initial spawns may not be successful, since the female may not be experienced enough to care for the eggs or fry.

hmmm....
btw, i wondering for such a small size apisto, if i mix them with 1 otocinclus, will the oto harass them, or via versa?
