I just got in several pairs of these from friends in Germany. They are great!! I hope to post some pictures soon once they settle. In the meantime, will someone clear up the controversy over the name for me. Fishbase says it was Chinensis, now it's Ocellatus. Comments?

    Thanks,

that is definitely not an ocellatus. Here's a pic of what an ocellatus looks like.

    Re: Macopodus chinensis or ocellatus?

chuac85 confused ocellatus to mean a shellie
Brian is referring to the Paradise fish.

MrTree is probably the best guy to answer the confusion around this group of fishes.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

    Re: Macopodus chinensis or ocellatus?

The consensus appears to be the it's M. ocellatus and that "chinensis" is the synonym. They are looking very good this morning!! So I am stoked to have them. I am told they will over-winter here, but I am not so sure. It's been -9C at night since last week, only now warming to above freezing. And there is ice on everything outside. Then again, they do come from NE China and Korea, so.............I think I will keep them cool this winter in my basement, then outside where the Racoons can't get to them this summer and see if they won't breed for me there. Then eave a few extra males out there the next winter and see how they do. It'd be cool to keep them like Koi-outside, I know people do THAT here.
