Re: Need suggestions: Articles for aquarium beginners

One answer i wanted before i start a tank is how much bugdet is needed to start a tank and what are the items that i need. This seemingly simple questions seems to have an elusive answers. Perhaps there can be an article on this aspect, categorizing it into something like low bugdet set-up , mid-bugdet set-up, expensive set-up etc to give newbies and idea of what to get and how much budget is needed.

Just reading the responses to this thread makes you learn a thing or two. But at the same times raise more questions if you are a newbie like me. Anyway, I am looking forward to the official 'information bank'.

Just another input/suggestion - Can the experts here supplement the posted information with a group session/discussion to be held on their most convenient time and venue? For sure most hobbyist of all levels will be eager to have their questions answered readily and get their hands on their projects after each session. Experiences shared are better way to appreciation of the hobby.

I hope this is possible and not too much to disturb our big brothers/sisters here. Thanks.

Blue Whale, why did i not think of it, the well water, is filtered you are right! We have lots of well water here. I knew not much of the chemical and ph of the water. what i used to do is go to the aquarium shop and tell the man i need to purify my water and give me a solution to put a few drops when i change the water. I shall experiment using the well water and see how long i need to change. Tap water i change twice a month sometimes once, depends on the flooring and inbetween my woods. Thank you great help

    My noob questions.

    1) How big a tank must I get in order for me to enjoy my hobby and not make me give up my hobby

    2) What type of filtration? (OHF or canister or internal)

    3) Do I need to put any substrate if I am keeping certain fishes?

    4) How long must I leave my tank lights on per day?

Re: Need suggestions: Articles for aquarium beginners

Hi everyone! This is my first post ever. I have been reading up on non co2 and exel methods for some time now. And have finally got most of the things that are needed for the startup. What I need to know is,...can I use AquaSoil Amazonia for a new NonCO2 tank. Since water change is a strict no-no in NONCO2 tanks I was planning to go by Tom's Dry Start Method for 2 months, then flood the tank & use Exel for 2 months and slowly taper off over a period of another 2 months and then finally go into the Non Co2 way. I read this up at TheBarrReport.com. It sounded magical!! But has anyone tried this here. I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

How to grow foreground, background aquatic plants?
Conditions required, characteristics of the plant, etc.

Choosing the right foreground and background aquatic plants.

PS: micardiz, start a new thread. This thread is information collection only. (not scolding you)

Just look for the section where you find the article, most likely you can get stormhawk, shadow, tom etc to reply you.

Precisely, that's what made the luohan I saved so unique, that was why I suspected that it was not farm breeded in the first place.

Sorry to say this but there's really no natural occuring Luohan in this planet. All Luohan are man made, mix bred by 3 types of cichlid if I recalled correctly. It could be that you bought the Archer fish instead of the luohan.

    BFG,

I know what you are saying. Quite confirmed it's a female luohan. I save it at QianHu. I still remember after all these years. There were like 5-6 rows of hundreds over packet of luohans for sale. Only this one was broken, deflated and half filled with water. Then the luohan caught my eyes (I do not know it's female until later). I decided to save it by buying it over.

PS: BFG, could you move our converse out of this thread to a seperate thread? =) Thanks.

This girl, like an orphan which display an exceptional high intelligence, the way she ask for food, the way she play was not like any fishes we ever seen. Such wisdom mostly exhibit in Koei, or old Arowanna. I felt it was like fated to meet her.

There was a period of time where I was sick, several fishes passed away, and she was one of them...I got better thereafter, what do you think then?

When I first joined the forum my first question will be:-

    1) what is the different in meaning between water cycling and aging.

    Followed by:

    2) How to ensure aqua plants lives healthily (including type of soils, temp, lightings, water regime...) before putting in fishes to beautify the whole set-up.
